isn't that the same concept as used in battle chess? Anyway I just recently got into playing some chess again myself, so I might keep an eye on this.

No, not really. Archon actually made you fight to take a piece. Battle Chess just showed a short animation of a fight when you took a piece. The Chess Kombat minigame from MK: Armageddon is based on Archon. It just uses the MK fighting system.
