I don't know if you guys have trailers for The Condemned. But do not go see this movie. It is a blatant ripoff of Battle Royale, spawned from a comment made by the director that is trying to re-make the film in the states.

The plot of Condemned, from IMDB:
Quote:
An adrenalin-charged action thriller, "The Condemned" tells the story of Joe Conrad (Stone Cold Steve Austin), who is awaiting the death penalty in a corrupt Central American prison. He is "purchased" by a wealthy television producer and taken to a desolate island where he must fight to the death against nine other condemned killers from all corners of the world, with freedom going to the sole survivor.

And here is what Roy Lee, the director who is trying to re-make Battle Royale for an American audience (he is also the one who re-made the grudge) said in an interview a few years ago:
Quote:
Though Mr. Lee declined to discuss details of their plans, he did offer a few hints. The remake will still be about high school students. "We could make them a bunch of prisoners from jail taken to an island," he said, "but that would be pointless."

And for anybody unfamiliar with the plot of Battle Royale, here is what IMDB has:
Quote:
At the dawn of the new millennium, Japan is in a a state of near-collapse. Unemployment is at an all-time high, and violence amongst the nations youth is spiralling out of control. With school children boycotting their lessons and physically abusing their teachers, a beleaguered and near-defeated government decides to introduce a radical new measure: the Battle Royale Act overseen by their former teacher, Kitano ('Beat' Takeshi) and requiring that a randomly chosen school class be taken to a deserted island and forced to fight each other to the death, the Act dictates that only one pupil be allowed to survive the punishment. He or she will return, not as the victor, but as the ultimate proof of the lengths to which the government are prepared to go to curb the tide of juvenile disobedience.

So anyway. Don't support this movie. It is a bastardization of a concept that in its original form was brilliant and made valuable statements about government and the inherent submission to authority, not to mention human nature. I just saw the trailer for The Condemned and it kind of makes me ill. >.>

I called that out right as I saw the trailer for it. I turned to Chris and said "Battle F'in ROYALE! WTF!??"

And he gently smiled and agreed but also pointed me in the direction of this:

The Most Dangerous Game

There's a list of movies and shows inspired by or referencing this short story of man hunting man.

Yeah, I have no interest in seeing this but I would also choose to not see this movie on the principal it's a WWE vehicle and well, they just aren't good. And with the lead being Stone Cold Steve Austin, there's only one audience it's going to attract anyway.

Dude, you're totally on my brain. Except of Steve Austin, we had Jesse Ventura.

Well, a lot of people say that Battle Royale was inspired by Lord of the Flies. Also, the wiki list fails to mention the Battle Royale novel (off which the movie was based) in the print section, making it seem like the movie was inspired by the Most Dangerous Game. You can also get into the argument that there is no so thing as an original idea XD! But the main reason why The Condemned is so distasteful is that is takes something that Roy Lee said about Battle Royale and turns it into a movie plot o___O

And, yeah, like you said, the whole WWE thing. I don't see this being a masterpiece. XD!

Yeah, I know. There's no such thing as an original idea. XD! But this stuck out to me because The Condemned basically took a plot idea that Roy Lee mentioned in an interview and turned it into a film (see first post) o___O There's something wrong about that, especially since it was so bad. XD!

Jesse "The Body" Ventura. That was a pretty cool movie...

Sorry to hijack your thread Scrum. BTW, I was also going to make reference to Lord of the Flies before, but I refrained...

I'm pretty sure BR is older than all of the stuff you've mentioned, though. XD

But yay for Jesse Ventura! <3

Edit: Or not. 1999, really? *stares at wikipedia* I could've sworn it was older than that.

Yeah The Running Man was in 1987. I kinda want to see this for one reason tho...

Just to see how they manage to throw in the Stone Cold Stunner in the movie. In every movie that stars a wrestler, they always manage to have them pull off their signature move SOMEHOW.

Granted I won't see it in theaters...thats what i have cable for.

*shudders at the hour and a half of my life gone from watching DOOM*

I wish they'd make an -actual- American version of BR, not a ripoff that sort've resembles it. The Japanese movie was pretty awful, but I can imagine the sorts of amazing things the American film industry could do with the book.

Of course, they might also completely ruin it...but I doubt it. BR itself should be good enough for Hollywood without significant changes.

Actually, The Running Man movie is loosely based off of a Stephen King novel (of the same name) that was written in 1982.

And Lord of the Flies was originally published in 1954.
