New game download channel coming to Wii

While Nintendo keeps pumping out a multitude of new classic games for their Virtual Console, it seems that Nintendo is planning to roll out a new downloadable game service for the Wii for games that fall outside of the Virtual Console realm. According to an interview with System 3's CEO Mark Cale on PALGN their upcoming titles, such as Impossible Mission, will be available both in retail and downloadable versions--and Nintendo's got some announcements coming.

"PALGN: So it will be coming to the Virtual Console?

MC: I wouldn't say Virtual Console, because they're not actually calling it the Virtual Console, but in the next few months there will be various announcements I'm sure made by Nintendo that will offer users a system that will be similar to that of what Microsoft is offering at present, which is the ability to download content, which you guys are able to do, but they've got to set up their various systems. Microsoft are years ahead of the other two major players in that regard. It really depends on when Nintendo are rolling out their strategy, which I expect will be within the next two months."

What could this mean? Nintendo in the past has said that they'd be open to having new content and independent games released for download on the Wii, but are they cooking up something that would be more like Xbox Live Arcade? Could be. If true, we're betting we'll hear something about this at E3.

I think it would be awesome if it was something that allowed for easy access to independent games. That might encourage people to make more independent titles; I would love to see another Alien Hominid.
