This rumor has been brewing for a while, but reports are now showing more and more evidence that it may actually come true.
A 40G PS3 for the price of $399. This price point would undermine the 360 Elite. I've also heard that besides getting a Hard Drive 1/2 the size, the Memory card readers will also be removed, but wireless will be included!
Personally I think this would be a very smart move if they could pull it off. People paid $400 for the 360, and the PS3 is a much better value, and it's around the time of a flood of games too.

Multiple sources claim budget SKU for the holidays.
By Steve Watts, 09/25/2007
The rumor mill began to churn a few weeks ago when an Ars Technica report claimed a mole inside Sony had leaked word to them of some price restructuring for the PlayStation line. The rumor focused on three points: the 80 gig PlayStation 3 dropping to $499, the PS2 dropping to $99, and a new 40 gig PS3 at a budget price of $399. The one that caught the tubes ablaze was the budget PS3, of course, and though it wasn't announced at the Tokyo Game Show like Ars Technica speculated, it was still heavily rumored to happen.
Those sparks were reignited as Sky News (via Next Generation) reported that Sony had recently employed Taiwanese firm FoxComm, which currently manufactures PlayStation 2 units, to start production on a 40 gig PlayStation 3. Sky News went on to speculate that Sony could be preparing for an announcement as early as this week to help steal Microsoft's spotlight from the release of Halo 3.
Serving as even more evidence, Newsweek's N'Gai Croal stated on his weekly Monday Morning Quarterback blog entry that he "started to get some...rumblings from trusted sources outside of Sony that, if true, strongly suggest that a $399 SKU is on the way. My source tells me that Sony placed a sizable order for 40 gigabyte hard drives."
Croal says his source claims profit and loss margins have been put in the hands of individual Sony territories, making price cuts up to the discretion of SCE America, SCE Europe and SCE Japan. Because of all this, he expects a $399 PS3 in North America before Thanksgiving -- something that could cost him a well-publicized bet.
GamesIndustry.biz reports that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has denied the price drop as mere "rumour and speculation." It is worth noting, however, that if Croal's sources are correct and individual territories are making decisions for pricing, the European branch could correctly deny a price drop without necessarily commenting on plans made by SCEA.
Right now, things seem to be pointing towards a $399 PS3 SKU being announced for the holidays. File this one as a rumor for now, albeit one with mounting evidence to support its case. |

Well they said when the announced the price that they were going to get it down as quick as possible b/c the understood it was expensive.
It's been an interesting ride. But even with the high price tag... the PS3 is creeping up on 5 Million sold.
If they release a $400 SKU, I wouldn't doubt that they would be close to 7Million by the new year. |

If they did a comparible UK price drop, I'd actually get one in a heartbeat, but, I cant see the UK getting the same drop, as we tend to get screwed on that front quite often. |

I heard something about one coming out for 300 pounds in the UK.
Not sure how valid that is, but they said it would still undermine the 360 Elite.
I know a lot of people that would jump on one for $400! |

And more evidence?...
With Wireless!
If this is in fact a 40G $400 PS3, the PS3 has now reached the "best value" mark in the next gen market right now.

FCC reveals PS3 model CECHG01 -- the el cheapo 40GB PS3?

Having just denied the existence of a low cost, entry level PS3, we weren't expecting to find a new PS3 model from Sony parked in the FCC exhibits list this morning. That's right, a new PlayStation 3 model CECHG01 was just unearthed. The juiciest of documents are all withheld upon Sony's request for confidentiality. However, we did manage to scrape up a few details: Bluetooth 2.0+EDR; 802.11b/g WiFi; a 3.2GHz CPU clock speed just like other PS3s; 66MHz ATA, 133MHz ATA, 33MHz PCI and 750MHz SATA1; and a bevy of ports including USB, HDMI, and Ethernet. At least that what it looks like after combing through the data. Nothing new, eh? So the reason for the new model number is likely the result of a hard disk change given Sony's preference for unique models reflecting changes in storage. However, for all we know that could be an increase and not a decrease in capacity so we'll all have to hold tight for now and watch this unfold. |

And the evidence keeps popping up.
Sony's site http://www.bluraysavings.com/ now shows an additional sku under the PS3 Qualified SKUs for the 5 free movie deal.
CECHG01, which happens to be the same model submitted to the FCC in my above post.
Sony has stated that they are going to release some big news on the 12th of this month. We will see what happens.
There was also an article a while back talking about Sony buying up a bunch of 40G 2.5" SATA Hard drives. I'll see if I can find it.
So here's what I think is going to happen. On the 12th, they will announce a $400 40G PS3 that will be exactly the same as the current 80G except for ...
40G HD instead of 80G
2 USB ports instead of 4
No flash memory card readers.
So ... what are you losing... Well... Nothing really.
I've only used like 20G of my 60G hard drive... if that.
I've never used the flash readers and I've never used more than 2 usb ports at the same time. And even if you did need the readers or extra usb ports. You can get any usb hub or any flash card reader from the store for like $10 and it would most likely work in the usb ports of the PS3.
This is just my theory of course. We will see how it goes.
$400 PS3?
Yeah... go buy it! |

Well it's official in the UK. But one thing I don't understand is that they are saying the 40G is NOT Backwards Compatible with PS2 games. Whereas I think this has been mentioned before... I just don't get how that's possible if it's been being handled by Software. Unless there was still SOME hardware in the machine besides the EE that was handling it.
Either way, that kinda sucks.
Also... removal of the memory card slots and 2 of the USB ports has been confirmed. Both the memory card slots and USB ports can be regained via basic USB hubs and/or USB based memory card readers.
The 60G also got a price drop.
Gamespot wrote: | UK PS3 drops price, 40GB finally official
Sony makes two big announcements for its UK customers in a pre-Christmas bid to boost PS3 sales; revised hardware loses PS2 backwards compatibility.
By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK
Posted Oct 5, 2007 12:12 pm ET
One of the worst kept secrets in the games industry has finally been officially announced. After a flurry of rumours and leaks that a new 40GB SKU of the PlayStation 3 would be coming, Sony has finally confirmed the speculation is in fact, no longer speculation.
The new 40GB version will debut in the UK on October 10, and is "no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles," according to Sony. It will also only sport two USB slots instead of four, and will ditch the multi memory card port--although this can be added on with an accessory. The 40GB version will go on sale at a price point of £299 (about $610).
The 40GB PS3 in the wild.
In a statement, Sony said of the lack of backwards compatibility, that it reflected, "both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles."
When asked about PSOne games, Sony told GameSpot, "the backwards compatibility of PS one titles is achieved through software and the vast majority of PSOne titles are backwards compatible with the new PS3." Sony did not return calls to comment by press time on why PlayStation 2 compatibility--which has always been handled with software in European PS3s--could not be achieved with the new model as well.
That's not all UK Sony fans are getting for the holidays; Sony also announced a price drop on the standard 60GB version, which will continue to be sold alongside the new model. The current Starter Pack, which boasted a 60GB PS3, two first-party games, and two Sixaxis controllers, will be discontinued.
It will be replaced by the new Value Pack, which will feature a backwards compatible 60GB PS3, one Sixaxis wireless controller, and two first party titles, and will cost £349 (about $712)--a £76 (about $155) price drop from the current price of £425 (about $868).
"As we approach our very first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value," commented Ray Maguire, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK. |
