While word of the PlayStation Store was well-received, in practice it hasn't quite felt done yet. So far, it's been accessible only via the PlayStation 3, so those who own the PlayStation Portable exclusively have been out of luck to download the PS1 titles it offers. Kaz Hirai's Tokyo Game Show announcement that the Store was on its way to PSP via PC was a welcome one, and it looks like Sony is currently in development to make the roll-out a success.
Citing sources close to SCEA, GamesIndustry.biz claims that three action games, two rhythm games, one racing game and one shooting game are being developed for the PSP to be distributed via the PlayStation Network. The games are said to be between one-third and one-half of the size of a UMD, which means you could fit two or three of them on the 1GB memory stick that's included with the PSP Slim bundles.
GI also claims Sony is working to sway third-party developers to work on downloadable titles for PSN, reasoning that development would result in better profits by removing the cut retailers claim. Of course, the last time Sony cut retail from their supply chain, we saw what seemed to be a compromise on the part of the company, so time will tell if the retail chains take kindly to the move. |
