Well, my Japanese friend, Yukari, is in town for a month staying with me and last night we had this great japanese feast for some of my friends here in athens^.^
We made some of my favorite japanese foods: Katsudon, okunomiyaki, and sukiyaki. All the groceries were bought at the international farmers market on buford highway so anyone could make this stuff...it's really not so hard! plus they have real japanese drinks like pocari sweat, teas, calpis and other stuff I missed so much from japan!
apparently super h mart in norcross is also really good...
if anyone is interested in trying your hand at making the dishes I'll be happy to give out the recipes^.^
oh yeah....koshihikari brand rice is the best rice ever!!!

yeah..we've been hanging out a bit since she got to athens^.^

I tried okonomiyaki once (a long time ago) and I really liked it! ...but I no longer eat eggs so I haven't tried to fix it. |

yeah, most of this stuff is not vegan friendly...and most tastes better with meat as well....but for okunomiyaki couldn't you use some sort of egg substitute?
in any case:
Katsudon:
-pork (if you go to the asian grocers they'll probably have it cut specficially for katsu, otherwise it should be a square piece about the size of your palm)
-flour
-eggs
-bread crumbs(they have specific stuff for katsu and tempura at the asian grocers)
-onions
-rice
-sukiyaki sauce (probably the most important ingredient, Ive yet to find it at a store other than the asian ones...)
so for the meat prep you put salt and pepper on both sides of each slice and tenderize it a little then cover it with flour, then dip it in the (mixed) egg and then cover it really really well with the bread crumbs...then you fry it! yummm.....when you're done frying you cut them in to four or five strips (widthwise)
then you fry the onions in sukiyaki sauce and water...I think its something like one onion for two people? and as far as the sukiyaki to water ratio I'm not sure but it probably depends on how strong the flavor you want, I know the level should be about as high as the onions.
after they've cooked for a while you pour mixed egg over it (about two per person) and let it cook for awhile....you shouldn't cook the egg completely, it should have a little jiggle/liquidity to it when its done and then you just slide if over some rice and voila!
