Leveling system huh?
That's cool. Not bad if you ask me.

Looking forward to it. Now I'm actually partially glad I waited to play through Uncharted again. Maybe we'll see a patch for it.

PS3 trophies, in-game XMB due July 2
Sony officially outlines medal-based leveling system for its console; trophies not retroactive, background music game-specific.
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
Posted Jun 30, 2008 8:23 am ET

Following a spate of leaks last week, Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 3's trophy system will arrive on July 2 as part of the v2.4 firmware update. As had been rumored, the system will eschew its competitor's cumulative numerical score, instead adopting a four-tiered approach which bestows four kinds of medals: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum.

The medals--which will be assigned by each game's developer, not Sony--will be associated with a task of relative difficulty; i.e. bronze medals will be doled for easy feats, and gold for harder objectives. "The platinum medals will only given when all other tasks are completed," Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network operations, told GameSpot.

Each trophy will have a numeric value associated with it--a value which will contribute to an overall leveling system, much like those in role-playing games. However, the user will be unable to see how much each trophy is worth, only a completion percentage for each game and each overall level. When asked why Sony was avoiding tying a score to the PS3's trophy system, Lempel said, "We don't know why our users would be interested in a numeric value...we think the medals best represent one's progress."

While trophies will become standard in all games in the future, they will only be added to a few existing games, including PixelJunk Eden, Super Stardust, and Warhawk. Other than BioShock, Sony said it could not confirm trophies for any existing or future third-party PS3 titles, including the wildly popular Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. However, it did announce a spate of upcoming first-party games which would include trophies, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation.

Unfortunately, PS3 trophies will not be retroactive. For games that have already been released, players must first download a patch for said game, and will then have to perform the same actions to receive the trophies as though they were playing the game for the first time.

Players PS3's trophies will be viewable via a new profile window will be accessible via the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which, as rumored, will be available in-game. The XMB will offer access to both at-a-glance trophy tallies, a more detailed breakdown of medals, and a side-by-side comparison of a player's trophies and those of any friend.

The new in-game XMB will offer a host of new features, including the ability to text message friends in-game and jump to other PS3 functionalities. However, many of said functionalities--including Web browsing and voice chat--will force players to quit their game and access the XMB traditionally. The rumored customizable in-game background music feature, which will allow players to stream music of their choosing from their hard drives over a game, was also confirmed However, the feature will be game-specific, meaning it is up to developers to add the feature or not.

So it looks like this update was delayed :/
I hope they use this time to further increase the functionality of the in-game XMB because from what I'm reading it's not nearly as useful as I was expecting it to be. It'll basically require you to exit out of the game you're playing to do pretty much anything. No chat initiation without exiting game? Still? Fail.

Trophies sound interesting but pretty much a moot point for older games.

Actually, I got it before they pulled it down.
It's exactly what they said it was...

in game XMB that gives you the ability to check and send messages and friend invites and change options of your bluetooth / usb devices.

What were you expecting? That's the only thing they've been talking about for the past couple of months or so.

In game chat invites were never said to be part of this update. And, honestly, it's not a big loss IMO. When I'm playing a game, I don't need to chat with people. I've never used the feature on Live. The exception to that is online games which should always have in game chat. THAT's what Sony needs to work on.

It works fine for me, but they pulled it down b/c some systems are having issues with it. So expect 2.41 soon.

The trophies are pretty much the same as Achievements. The only game that supports them right now is Super Stardust HD, which I have. I played it for about an hour last night and unlocked 9 Trophies. Smile The next one to get them is supposed to be Uncharted via patch.

Whats this "levelling" system I've heard about?

I'm not a fan of achievement points anyway, I don't have a problem with them but I don't go out of my way to get them really.

I guess I was expecting something ala Live where you can directly invite people to play games. As far as chat channels, what's the point in restricting someone to look at one screen while voice chatting? Pointless. I like to talk to my friends who are online while Im doing other stuff. Sometimes we'll enter in a chat channel while I finish a single player level of something before we get together and play online.

I would be willing to pay for as much functionality as Live.
Don't get me wrong, I definitely think it's a much needed improvement to the PSN but I still want -more-. I don't want to sit here and justify why the PSN is satisfactory when it is not according to my needs. Oh boy, I can send text messages without exiting the game, hey great. I can do that with my phone too, and faster. Not only that, but it allows you to create a -private- channel for you and your friends.

You know what's sad? I can't have that with PSN. Whenever I play Metal Gear Online I have to use Skype on my laptop in order to feel a satisfactory voice chat experience.

Obviously my needs as a gamer are unique. I'm not bashing or praising anyone, but as a consumer who engages in online play constantly I -demand- a higher level of functionality from my online gaming experience. Don't even get me started on Wii Friend Codes.

I am eagerly awaiting the update for the improvements, all I am stating is that I want more because I consume more.

Personally, I find the trophies to be a joke, as well as the entire PSN thing. When they first started talking about them they described 3D trophies, in a trophy room, that when you were accessing Home (i.e. Uber-vaporware) you would be able to stroll in and view your friends trophies, for me, I think that "Next-Generation" gaming is nothing without an easy to use, COMPLETELY FUNCTIONAL ONLINE COMPONENT. So even with it's hardware issues, to me, the only "Next-Gen" system to date is the 360. I've not seen anything on the PS3 that made me go, wow, this COULD NOT/IS NOT BE(ING) DONE on a different machine, which is why I've still not purchased a PS3. I will, it will just not be a priority until God of War 3 comes out or HOME (haha) actually materializes in the form that they promised. I wont accept some trimmed down, ad-heavy monstrosity. XBL is well worth 50 bucks a year to me, the ease of use is a no brainer, and well.....Gears, Gears, Gears

No doubt that is a cool feature. And I would love to have it on PSN. I don't see PSN catching up to Live this gen, but a applaud them for doing what they can to get as close to it as possible. Now they have the in game XMB which is a lot harder than you guys think to implement. It's all about resources. Now that XMB is in place, I'm sure we will start seeing other little features coming slowly but surely. The voice chat function on the PS3 is very much lacking, that is for sure.

People can always call someone faster than sending a message... but do they... these days... not nearly as much. Either way, I'm not saying you're wrong... but this is a step in the right direction.

Yeah but is that all that uncommon. Can you voice chat on WoW. That's the most popular online game EVER and you need some sort of third party program to do voice chat. I don't see it as "sad" as much as I see it as a bonus in Live. I'm not used to voice chat in all of my games just yet. So it doesn't seem like too much of a problem. And in reality, if I had skype available to me, I would much rather use that than Live's chat system anyway. Much higher quality.
Ultrawolf wrote:

Not necessarily unique, but you have definitely been spoiled by live and you consider that the norm. The problem is that it's not. Not yet anyway. In the next generation of consoles, I believe you will see much of the same functionality across platforms.

Oh no kidding. Frakin' hate those damn things. WORST ONLINE IDEA EVER!
Ultrawolf wrote:

It's ok Ultra... you're spoiled. Wink
But yes, a lot of the features that Live still has would be nice to have in PSN. I just don't see them as much of a priority like you do.

And that is still the plan. Home is just taking a lot longer than expected. Personally, I don't give a crap about Home, but ... who knows what it will end up being.
Gekko wrote:

And like Ultra, you too have been spoiled by something that is not the norm.
Gekko wrote:

The hardware issues, in my opinion, are directly related to Live. MS spent so much time working on live and they ignored the much needed QA on the system. They even knew about some of the problems and said to push out the system anyway. Gaming in general is in shambles right now and you can track it back to MS as the entire reason. They can't stand losing, so they rush out a system that hardly works and screw over the consumers of their first console by killing it and forcing everyone to buy another after less than 4 years... but it has this great thing called Live. Then Sony and Nintendo are forced to rush out their systems causing Sony to have high quality hardware but not have enough time to make PSN what it should be, and Nintendo has no online infrastructure at all and a system that is just a Gamecube with a new controller. If MS waits 1 more year, all of this could have been avoided. More QA into the system so less red rings. This gives Sony more time to flush out PSN and the cost of components goes down. Gives Nintendo a chance to make better chipsets for their system and still keep it cheap. This is of course just my opinion, but it makes sense.

First... MGS4 is one of the greatest games ever made. Wink
Second... I really think you would love Warhawk. Wink
I don't think Home is going to be what you want it to be. Honestly. It will come out, maybe this year, maybe next year, but I really don't expect it to be all that.
Gekko wrote:

Home will have ads... no doubt, but I think they are going to be less in your face and more like... billboards... and the like.

Yeah... Live is worth the money. No doubt. PSN is free. And it's a good thing. But that's really all Sony has ever talked about on a regular basis... free online play.

Seriously though... I can't believe you still play Gears so much. Wink
