I think (im not too sure) that anime means Japanese animation, or Japanimation, or Anime. Its the style that people draw in Japan, apparently, or something like that, cause it originated in Japan. Now im not 100% on this one, but i think thats what it is

Actually Anime originated in the Early Betty Boop Cartoons...Japan was so impressed by them that they decided to copy them in their own style, hence the large eyes and sultry bodies on females and dorkyness in most male roles. But Anime is BASICALLY originated in Japan and sometimes colored in Korea. There are some Anime that come out of Hong Kong but since Britain lost HK the animation has kinda stopped cause most anime speaks out on certain subject, like government, and commies don't appreciate that.

So yeah...There's some history for yas.

As Righty' put it, anime is the Japanese word for animation. HOWEVER, it's coined for Japanese animation, though I do disagree with people when they say "anime" MEANS Japanese Animation. If you want to get technical, any animated cartoon from America or anywhere else is anime- mainly because it's animated. Kinda how people call Japanese animation "cartoons"- which I don't see a problem with either.

Strongbad's Anime checklist:

-Real big eyes.
-Unnatural hair color.
-The mouth: real tiny when it's closed, ridiculously huge when it's open.
-Robot boots.
-Make the characters all shiny.
-Put the characters into some space setting.
-Put the characters into cool poses.
-Make someone else do the voices.
-"Japanese cartoons are weird, man."

I add to this:

-At least one catgirl per show.
-At least one bishounen per show.
-At least one romance per show.
-Tall mechs
-Big-ass wars.
-If hentai, at least one character must have an unnatural (and disturbing) number of breasts or penises (or both)
-If comedy, must be about one guy with lots and lots of girls, or vice-versa.
-Genres must mix in. So in every serious action series, you will find at least one uber-funny situation.
-All the girls in the show must have the looks of goddesses and be uber sexy.
-All the guys are either too fat, too skinny, too stupid or too nerdy to be of any interest to girls watching the show.
-There has to be an alien somewhere, ANYWHERE!

Nowadays anime is basically a style of animation. Like say for instance most older american cartoons wouldn't be considered anime. Alot of the newer cartoons could be considered anime though, because they use several aspecs of it. Shows like X-Men Evolution, the new TMNT, and The new Heman all have styles based on anime. Heman is animated in Korea, so it could probably be considered true anime.

Wait, the way the question is being answered confuses me. Slingshot asked how Anime is defined, which would make anime defined as the Japanese word for animation- yet everyone's answering with "Anime is Japanese Animation" or describing characteristics of Japanese Animation in general. If the question were "how would you define the anime-style", or "how would you define Japanese Animation", I would understand, but now my head hurts, lol. I think I must have read the question wrong, or perhaps it wasn't specific to me...though it is a general question that can be interpreted anyway a person feels it should be, so that makes my argument moot. Rock

...::stares blankly into space stupified:: duuuuh..
