This is not directed to anyone on the boards. It is directed to wannabes and posers.

I'm so tired of all you wannabe Punk/Goth people! You think you're so hardcore just because you listen to Averial Lavgine! Screw her! She's not hardcore! She is a sellout and a poser just like you! Just 'cuz I don't have $150 dollars to drop on a pair of pants at Hot Topic (which is owned by Ambacrombie and Fitch) doesn't mean anything. Jelly bracelets?! You damn conformist! Then you have the nerve to tell me I'm preppy?! You listen to Averial Lavgine and Brittany Spears and then have the nerve to tell me KoRn, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath are sellouts? Do you even know who they are?! I say underground you say "oh yeah dude i like totally went like shopping and Underground Atlanta yesterday." You think because you talk about Pot and Marijuaniah you are so cool. What the Hell?! You wanna screw your life over? Fine don't come complaining to me! Do you even listen to your idol Averial: "Crack is wack and don't have sex." Damn you ignorant sluts! You say you have problems because you can't find that Simple Plan CD? Screw you! Come back to me when you have a real problem! You see these criss cross scares on my arm? Yeah, that's a problem. You're sad because you can't get a date? What is you couldn't get your body?! Hiding everyday so you can fit in! I hate you! I can't stand you! You make me fucking sick! Die and go to hell and leave me the fuck alone! I wanna cry and scream and shout and yell and hurt and help you all at the same time! You drive me crazy! GODS!

I'm not a punk/goth by any standards, but I like listening to the music, and I'm intrigued by the culture, but I agree with you wholehartedly. The point of these movements is to fight conformity, but in fighting conformity, they conform themselves. It's a hypocritical catch-22. Not to say that having a group identity is a bad thing, but its now at a degree where it has traversed being identity.

I'm not going to talk about my feelings with the arbitrarily thrown around accusation of "sell out" or of what is/is not punk/goth, because it just pisses me off, and I don't want to make this long.

Lastly, you're totally right. Half these kids have no clue what problems really are. They just like to whine and claim they have problems because its the "trendy" thing to do. Again, its just a form of hypocritical conformity. If you think you have problems because you don't have a date, you should join the club of pretty much everyone else around you, punk, goth, or not. You're an adolescent, its not supposed to be that easy. I personally don't claim to have problems, but I can assuredly tell you what REAL problems are...things that none of these whiners posess.

If you really want to defy conformity, be yourself.

Hey thanks! It's just some girl said i was a prep today because I didn't like Averial. I said well I'm listening to Black Sabbath right now. And she said Black Sabbath is soooooo sell out. Then she proceeded to tell me why Averial was the best. I just can't take it ya know. Any one who says Black Sabbath is sell out has got some bigger issues. Then I said Averial was a little conformist (which is an understatement) and she said that Black Sabbath was totally conformist and everybody listened to them espically posers. It was all I could do not to hit her.

Well, the best advice I can give right now is not to care quite so much about what people say. I mean, care, but realize that people say and think some completely ridiculous things. We're all guilty. I've probably said more stupid things than most people, even. The point is that, you know what? What they say and think really doesn't matter in the long run. At all. What matters to you is what you say. What you think. How [/i]you[/i] feel. I mean, I know it makes you angry to hear someone saying blatantly untrue things about something you care about, but at the same time, does it matter? I mean, not to belittle your feelings or anything, but she is one person. She may not believe what you believe, but then, neither do I. I think Black Sabbath is just as conformist as Miss Levine, simply because so many people want them to be nonconformist. If you wish to be truly nonconformist, you must first ignore all outside variables, and think about what you like. Then, to take music as an example, listen to everything you like. Everything. You'll like somethings that most people you know don't like, but you know what? That's OK. That makes you you. To deny your own likes and dislikes in favor of a given crowd, be they conformist or nonconformist, is the essence of conformity itself.

Anyway, I realize I've gotten slightly off track here. The point: Don't let it bother you. Not everyone will agree with you, and most of them will try to tell you all the reasons that you're wrong. As long as you believe in yourself, they will never persuade you, and should therefore be ignored as so much junk along the road of life.

But really, that's good. Just don't let people like that bother you. You can't reason with 'em, and you'll never persuade 'em to your point of view, so just ignore 'em. They'll go away after awhile.

I used to be like that. Hate Brittany Spears. Hate Jessica Simpson. Hate Christina Agularia. Blah Blah Blah... Now i really just listen to pretty much everything. Granted I have my likes (Underground, Metal, heavy Metal, Grunge, Rock, Techo) and my dislikes (Pretty much everything else) But if I can relate to the lyrics i usually like it. And music is such a big part of peoples lives now.
