As a young kid, I wanted to be Superman. I remember my dad watching the old Superman movies, and i would get next to him and watch alongside him.
When he became paralyzed...there was no belief that that could happen...that was the man of steel they were talking about!! How could he stay Paralyzed!
Alas, he fought with his paralyasis, and eventually regained movement in his head and right hand...a feat that not many have ever strived to achieve. Our Man of Steel was truely made of steel as he worked to regain the ultimate ability...the ability to walk.
Last night, Christopher Reeve died of heart failure...the Man of Steel has passed away...how could that happen to the man who was a Superhero? All we can do is bow our heads to this wonderful man, and just admire his aspirations. Would he have lived longer, the Man of Steel would have probably been able to walk again...he was working towards it, and everyone knew he could have done it.
At least he can walk again...with God.
Long Live Superman

The Superman movies were a big part of my childhood as I would constantly yell at Superman to watch out for the bad guys through the screen.
I hope you have found peace Mr. Reeves. |

It is sad when such a person has to leave us
And I would go into it, but you know what, I don't think I could do it better than Tobs did.
Well said my friend.
Goodbye Superman. You will always be a part of us. |

Quick spelling note... it's Reeve, not Reeves.
But he shall be missed. I always admired his determination and willpower. He's an example to us all. |

It's very sad, but death I expect came as some what of a relief to him.
His strength was a wonder though, I would not want to live as an invalid but he carried on for as long as he could. |

Took the words out of my mouth Reaper. I have respect for him if only for that. |

His strength of will was, indeed, super. He deserves respect and admiration for that alone, for truly embodying what Superman was all about: The will and the drive to never give up, to always fight the good fight beyond the fact that most people would say you were doomed to the start. I agree with Tobs. Had he lived he would have walked again. Maybe not for many a long year, but his will was that strong, his heart was that pure and light and noble. I know that, wherever he may be, he is happy and strong and flying up up and away one more time.

You know, it was one week away from the first time I had contact with him two years ago (Fall 2002). Mr. Reeve was an on-again/ off-again site at my congregation, The Unitarian Universalist Church in Westport CT. I actually wrote about my moment with him in my rant on the now defunct FlopJocks, here is what I had to say.
So once again I was to speak at the 11am service, but this time I would say my piece and go visit my old Youth Group to say hi to them as well. As I walked up, I noticed a man in a quadriplegic wheel chair with breathing apparatus attached. I paid little attention and proceeded to light my candle, and speak of my personal emotions. As I left, I passed right by that man, and looked over to him.
There was Christopher Reeve.
I was staring into the eyes the guy who taught us how to believe a man could fly. He had been through more in his lifetime than even the lowest scum should not go through, and he was looking me right back into the eye. In the briefest of moments, he nodded his head and softly said two words to me…”Thank you”
I could barely contain myself before I got out of the sanctuary, and then I just exploded in a torrent of emotion and tears. He had thanked me. This man who was, no IS the man of steel had been humble enough to thank me when I should have been thanking him.
Mod bless, Mr. Reeve. You showed a resolve stronger than steel. You proved yourself to be a far greater source of hope in this world than you will ever know. You were given the greatest gift a person can have, and that was to make a difference with your life. In the case, you got to touch the heart of at least one person. You gave me a moment that I carry with me, and showed me what real courage is: to smile at life no matter what might be happening.
Go with life, and may some day we meet again so that I may tell you this |
