T3h New Job

Well everyone, the wait is finally over. Yes, after six months of long hard searching, Musashi has finally landed a job, and a pretty good one at that. I just started work this past Monday. I'm working 8am-5pm M-F as a Tech Support Specialist with the financial aid department of the university I graduated from. Basically, this means I'll maintaining the fin. aid and scholarship websites with Dreamweaver, generating reports for the department with Crystal Reports, and working at the front desk from time to time as needed. Not bad, eh? ^^;; Everything's going pretty well. They signed me up for a couple of training classes for the software I'll be using, so that's pretty cool. I probably won't -really- be doing a whole lot but training until the first of the year or so.

Hmm... ok, well, since this is the Soap Box, I suppose I need to rant about something... so, let's start with parking. First day at work I got a parking ticket b/c I parked in a guest spot at Human Resources. Which I -was- a guest at human resources, but I had my alumni tag on my car ... so yeah, police made a mistake. That's all taken care of now though, except that I still haven't gotten my faculty parking card so I'm having to park entirely too far out for the time being. Also, I'm going to kill the next student that parks next to me nearly over the line and at an angle. I swear, if you screw up your parking, back it out and try it again

Anyway, just thought I'd let you guys know where I've been lately. Because of the drive and traffic I'm having to wake up around 5:45 am and I don't get home till around 6:30 or 7:00 pm. Very annoying, but eh, that's how it goes. Hopefully in a few months I can move closer to my job and that won't be an issue.

Well I already know all this... and I'm happy for you bro.

My suggestion though...

Get your Masters while working there... after you get it... look for another job that will pay you more.

Colleges never pay Techies what they deserve. So take advantage of your tuition discounts.

Yeah, I'll be eligible for tuition waiving after I've worked here for 6 months. I'm not sure whether to get a master in applied computer science or business admin. Also, I don't know... the tuition coverage may be different since my school charges more for the CS master's program to cover for all the distance learning and the professional certification you get.

I would get the master in applied computer science. So early in your career this is what will help you most.

Later on down the road when you want to stop actually codeing and manage stuff, then you get the MBA

Right now, I want to get both.
