The Anime Underdogs...

I think there are quite a few anime movies/series that just don't get the respect that they deserve. I'd like to spread the word about some not so much talked about anime.

1. Boogiepop Phantom- It just seems to me that not enough people have heard of this. It's a great horror-ish story. It reminds me of Tales from the Crypt a bit. I don't want to give to much away, so I'll just give you the basic rundown.

A strange light appeared in the city not to long ago. Ever since then meloncoly/angst ridden teens have been having strange experiences, some even have supernatural abilities. One teen has the ability to see peoples worries as a spider over their heart. He makes it his personal crusade to relieve their worries by devouring the spiders he collects. Another teen uses his power to take apart things he finds useless....in a pretty gruesome manner.

Anyhoot, I can't say more about this one without ruining it. I'll just warn you that the series is a bit of a puzzle. All the events fit together, but the episodes jump time lines. You'll need to pay attention to it.


2. Now and Then: Here and There-

An incredible dramatic war story that takes place in another world that just doesn't seem to get enough recognition. Here's the jist....

A young boy is walking home from kendo practice when he meets a young girl. Trying to make conversation with her he is only able to get her name. Before long the meeting is interupted by soldiers from another world (in really great mecha designs) who have been sent to capture the girl. In a breif skirmish the boy and girl are transported to a wasteland of a planet consumed by war. Both are quickly taken prisoner. The boy is forced to join his captors army. It is soon revealed that water is perhaps the most valuable commodity in the dessert planet (kind of like in the movie Tank Girl) and the girl taken captive is the key to oceans of water.

The series follows the boy as he tries to find in himself the strength to overcome his own personal obsticles, the turmoils of war, and the suffering of others.



Now I could go on and on, but I want to hear what other people think. And if you've seen either of the anime I listed....lets here what you think.

I can say that I adore Boogiepop Phantom. Took me until the very, very end to get it, but I still like it. It's a very interesting anime, and you really do have to pay close attention to it or you will miss it. I think a lot of people don't like it as much because it focuses so much on the individual characters, and it is almost as though the storyline is secondary, but I think it's a nice twist. Someone actually gave it to me because he did not care much for it. I watched the entire movie in one setting. My eyes were about fried due to the length, but I could not stop watching it!

Now and Then: Here and There did look pretty good. I think I saw a preview for it. How long is the series?

Now and Then: Here and There is roughly 3 dvds. I don't remember how many episodes there are, but it's something like 10-12. Very good stuff.

Well in his choices, it can also be said that these are great in their ability to really raise the emotions and drama. Not only do you feel for these characters, but it will wrench your heart to see what happens, and that it keeps on happening with no salvation in sight till the end. Very good stuff.
