I was wondering what people thought about the basic idea behind the lyrics from Disturbed's song "Prayer."
Living just isn't hard enough, burning alive inside
Living my life's not hard enough, (possibly "they") take everything away.
I am not questioning the reason he wrote that necessarily but rather intend it as a question of, "Is life hard enough?"
Keep killing whitey,

Hmmm... Might want to post the entire song lyrics, since if I try to analyse just that piece, I'll end up taking it out of context. |

What I wanted to convey with my question, and it is a question I receive everytime I hear that song, is the difficulty of life. Do you believe personally that life is hard, easy, or somewhere in between.
Personally I believe (and I watch for lightening storms when I say this) that life is entirely too easy. I'm somewhat of an off color Christian and I believe we got off really good considering the original sin. In my life, I have really tried for absolutely nothing. Most of it just comes. I receive opportunities, intellect, and love without much effort. It never ceases to amaze me with how people make life out to be so difficult.
There I went first. Now its your turn kiddies

to quote a favorite movie of mine: "Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what your gonna get."
It varies from person to person, opinion to opinion. For me, i think life is just right. It's certainly challenging, and at times, it seems impossible, but at those times, i feel most alive, and most in my element.
Yet, in another light, life is only as hard as you make it out to be. For you whitey, as an example, life comes easily, and things may just appear for you faster than other. Some other people make it out to be harder depending on what happens in life.
For me, i tend to find philosophy in the musings of Tool, and their song Parabola: "This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality, embrace this moment, remember we are eternal all this pain is an illusion"
All in all, i like both songs

I'm going to have agree with Tobs in that it varies from person to person. But, allow me to take a cynnical perspective on this all, since I'm in a generally bad mood right now...
For me, life isn't so bad. Like Tobs, it's pretty much just right. I have to face my share of challenges and obstacles, but that's what makes life interesting. Sometimes the challenges are tougher and I wish that life was easier, but for the most part, I'm also like whitey. Everything seems to come pretty easy for me, to a certain extent. The only catch, I have found, is that I generally have to work for what I get. If things are easy for you, you shouldn't bitch about it, because you're lucky.
What I will say, and this is where the cynicism comes in, is that some people have it entirely too easily, and it pisses me off because most of them don't deserve to have life be so easy. Take, for example, my old roommate. He was a genuine asshole, but he seems to have all the luck in the world. What's worse is that he knows it, and is arrogant about it. People like him piss me off, and to me, they should have more obstacles thrown in front of them. It all goes along with what I said before. If things come easy to you, count your blessings. And most importantly, shut the hell up about it. Because the second you brag about how easy you have it, you don't deserve it anymore.
I don't know if any of that made any sense. My thoughts right now, for the most part, are clouded by a dull rage. So I hope that I said something coherent that didn't offend anyone too badly.

See, whitey and I got way back and in comparison to his life, mine suxors. I've had shit thrown my way for the better part of my life, then started piling my own shit to boot.
Now, with that said, life is just too darn easy. When I look around me I see people getting off easy, and people getting the short end. It's all the same, a cosmic balance of Yin and Yang.
While and can look back and say 'that wasn't my fault, but I had to deal with it.' and 'that was my fault, shouldn't do that again' I can honestly say that I don't have it bad at all.
Also, the challenge is what I love about life, the hard the climb the greater the victory.
All in all, I wouldn't have my life any other way, cause it's all coming around and all the time I put in is starting to pay off, big.

Not meaning to pick on ya but is it easy or challenging?? :-p
Anywhooooo
I think it's what you make of it. If you let it be hard, it's hard. If you let it be easy, it's easy. I do however believe there are challenges out there and I thought life was too easy so I took on some of those challenges. For example, I want to go to medical and run a marathon. Boh of these are challenges. However the problem then is I get overloaded. Actually let me rephrase. I overloaded myself. Hey, that's the fun of it though. If you want challenge, go find it, because the beauty of life is that no matter how smart, how strong, how quick you are, there is something out there that is hard to do. Hmmm... I sound like a brochure for the Olympic Games.

Well, that' is an interesting problem isn't it. By definition a 'challenge' is hard. But once you comlete the challenge, you look back and go, 'eh, that wasn't so bad.'
That's what I mean. It's completing the challenge and looking back and going, 'phtt' and going on about my business.
Or better yet, it's the over all effect or level of life. If it's overall easy, it's easy even if you've had 'hard' times. If you've had nothing but crap thrown your way, and not that many good times, life them probably sux.

Life is what you make of it. Just as two people can view the same circumstances as having a different effect, overall, life is how you feel about it. That being said, people who often have it easy in life, aren't usually any happier than other people. Then there are other people whose highway of life has been hit by an earthquake, yet are happy. As long as you are able to enjoy what you have, despite whatever misfortunes befall you, ntohing can be too hard.
Eh, a bit off topic, but anyways, from my personal experience, life is easy. This could simply be the fact that I am one of those people that everything just seems to work out, except relationships, but hey I can do without. |

I whole heartedly agree that no matter the challenges in my life, even if I have failed at them, none have failed to mortally wound me. No relationships, no deaths, no accidents, nothing. I think that I must not realize what a real challange is because no matter what comes my way, nothing prevents me from moving forward. It appears that those who have more difficult hurdles to leap, Christopher Reeves for example, proceed through life in a similar manner. Nothing can really hold us back but ourselves.
Hmm...I wonder if we can breed out bad attitude? I'll help if you'll find me a goodwilled mate. |
