It's nice to know that there are still some caring people in the world.

Industry responds to tsunami disaster
Show of support from publishers and players sends funds where it's needed the most--directly to victims of December's tsunami.

Game companies and players around the globe are pitching in to donate money for rescue and reconstruction efforts taking place in the wake of South Asia's recent earthquake and tsunami.

Electronic Arts, based in Redwood Shores, CA, has pledged $250,000 to the UNICEF South Asian Tsunami Relief Fund. In addition, it will match employee donations (by a factor of 2:1) made to the UNICEF fund or to the American Red Cross International Response Fund through March 31, 2005.

In Iceland, CCP, the publishers of EVE Online, has established a fund that gamers can contribute to. Throughout the month of January, CCP will convey donated funds to the Icelandic Red Cross (IRC). The IRC has guaranteed to use 100 percent of the donations for tsunami relief. Donations can be made at the Eve Online Web site.

"We are very happy to see that also in the virtual universe, charity and caring are common human values," said Thorir Gudmundsson, director of communication at the Icelandic Red Cross. "This is clearly demonstrated by the EVE player community in its fundraising effort."

Similarly, gamers at the Big Screen Game Tournament, held January 8-9 in London, pitched in to raise nearly $2,000 for tsunami victims. Fans in London can continue to donate through the weekend of January 15. Donations there will go to England's Disaster Emergency Committee.

They omitted the line "The funds will be paid from employee payroll in lieu of overtime payments."

Hey, it could be true with EA.

I'm glad EA did that but I'm sorta pissed that they gave the money to UNICEF.

After Haji or whatever his name is (UN Leader) imbezzelled $20 Billion from the "Food for Oil" program. I'd NEVER give my money to any program even remotely connected to the UN.

For those who don't know UNICEF is a UN program.

I dont understand why you guyz bash game companies when you all still buy video games that they make or use stuff they put out. Everyone is always like.. Down with Microsoft. Why.. They may have some issues.. What company doesn't and they may have a good chunk of the market.. But who can blaim them for wanting to make money.. I know that if you were in bill gates shoes or in the president of EA Games shoes and making what they are making you wouldn't give a dang about boy cotting their stuff. So please quit hating on the guyz that are making it big just cause you aren't.
