Nearly 5,000 units are returned to Sony for buggy button; Kutaragi unapologetic about the handheld's design.
That's the headline, read the story here.

That sound you hear is the shrug of Sony's shoulder as they count their money. |

Yeah I thought the same thing. but what I'm hearing is that it doesn't affect gameplay.
4800 out of 1.5 million got sent back.
I personally think the design could have been better.
Here's an example...
http://www.gamesarefun.com/consoles/psp/square.jpg
I just don't understand why you would actually design something this way. I'm definatly getting a PSP, but I'm a little pissed about this issue...
I mean they could have put it in the right spot without makeing the screen smaller. The metal frame around it just would have needed to be "dented in" at that point so you could move the button out further. I mean look at it. They even have the foam outline with the "dent" in it for the square button. Why the hell!?!?!?
This is retarded. If they got the D-pad right, why couldn't they get the buttons right? Makes no sense. Definatly an issue of bad design. |

They couldn't have even extended the body a few centimeters to accomodate the button? That's pretty crappy. At least all the buttons on my DS work. |

From what I'm hearing, the button is designed a little differently. It feels a little different when you press it, but mostly that's it.
I have heard of the button sticking, but only until you break in the system.
I don't know, we will see, I'm still getting one at launch. |

What I find sad is that the guy tries to immunize Sony on the basis that it's the same as a "renowned architect". So being popular allows them to do designs like that?
Here's my solution: move the button too, God dammit! |

The joke has to be that "We created a thing of art..." line. This is a time when Form vs Function meant that Form won.
BTW thanks for that site, Shino. GameAreFun goes right up there with The Magicbox for me and the design is way (more busy but) complete.
All praise the Shin-meister! |

doesnt it give you the impresion they started to rush things a bit to get the launch around the same time as the DS? |

Well their reasoning is that they didn't want to make the machine bigger or the screen smaller.
I'm really not sure why they would do it this way, but it's retarded. But I have heard a lot of PSP owners saying that it's fine, so I'm not worried about it. |
