She died this morning at 9:05. I'm really, really ticked about her husband, because from everything I've heard, he wants to get onto his life, has a new girlfriend, and just doesn't want to divorce her. Her husband, Michael, said he didn't want her to suffer; I think that starving to death might be a little bit more suffering than having a feeding tube.

Okay. I'd respond to this, but we're not allowed to talk about politics anymore, or religion. And I think this falls under the category of both. |

The rules have been set for good reasons. These topics can not be discussed without "touching a nerve". I'm not sure how far this topic will fall into those two categories but everything at it's basic root does. It is the plan of the Mods/Admins to eventually create a forum tentatively named 'Blue In The Face' which will allow all this sort of discussion and it's eventual (and at times, venemous) disagreements. As this plan has been in the works for short time now, I'm sure it has either entered the planning stages or been forgotten about. *Meaning: Do not IM the MODS/ADMINS about this, they'll get to it when/if they can.* But either way, mostly, all we can discuss about anything that touches either of the Prime Categories (Religion and Politics) is the facts. |

I'll just say this, in a choice between death, and living the rest of my life with my higher brain function destroyed being barely sustained by my lower brain stem and life support systems, staring at a hospic wall al day, I would choose death.
She would have been dead 15 years ago if not for our crazy life support tech. What many people don’t understand is her higher mind function was DESTROYED. She could not listen to people, can’t interpret what she sees, and cannot think, she can't do anything but lie there in a vegetative state.. That is not life, that is being dead and your body just hasn’t caught on to it yet.

Her family certainly disagreed with that. They stated that she reacted with smiles and acknowleged their presence, and even gave a big smile every time she heard a certain song (it escapes me right now-might have been Amazing Grace). And the medical community has been wrong countless times before; my friend's cousin just died two weeks ago at the age of 16, doctors said he wouldn't make it past two months when he was born. |

It's a matter of quality of life and people wanting things for their own needs.
Many of us have been touched with death of a loved one, not ever given the chance of whether or not a plug should be pulled.
No one can truly discuss on these types of matters without experiencing it for themselves and even then different people and different emotions.
It's a sad situation, to be certain, and since no one has brought up this situation in the 15 years prior to now, I think we should let this go as none of us know truly what either side of her family was contending with.
At least she'll now have some peace. |

Strangely enough, South Park gave a simple explaination that seems to describe the situation fairly well.
One side was doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.
The other was doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. |

IF you really want to get down to it, this should have been a familial decision between the husband and the parents, not having the whole world dragged into it.
And in the end, our court system ruled legally in favor with the husband, who was not the one who first went to the media with this story either.
But it also is a shame that both sides were so tarnished by this mess |
