So I figured since I'm shipping myself down to AWA in a week and a half, I should probably start to watch/read some anime. You see, I was never a fan of anime, so when I was at AWA last year, I felt kinda silly, and vowed to expose myself to at least some of it. Well, procrastination aside, I've finally decided to make good on my promise...possibly too late, but ya know, better late than never. So here's what I've done so far...
I started picking up the mangas of a series called Priest. It's a wester/horror kinda thing, and so far I love it! It's my type of genre. I also borrowed a few DVDs from UP's little brother: Slayers, Gunsmith Cats, Read or Die, and Akira, and I know Tobs has Trigun knocking around the house somewhere. I've also been watching bits of Inuyasha, Samurai Champloo, and Full Metal Alchemist...all of which I'm enjoying, and I'm thinking of trying out FLCL and Hellsing, which look kinda cool.
So what do you think? Is that a good start? Any suggestions?
I never thought anime could be so much fun! |

Speaking as a seasoned fan I can assure you. You are most certainly on the right track as far as what series you are reading and watching. The only suggestion I can offer is, if you find yourself attracted to a particular genre then stick with it. Though at the same time don't be afraid to try new things, as there is always new stuff coming out. Be proud for you are entering a whole new realm of fandom.
Also if you want cheap manga you can always find issues of Shonen Jump for $5 and it gives you chapters from up to five different manga series. All worth a look.
Welcome to the ranks of western Otaku.
Though here is some advice that I find works well. It's ok to listen to others opinions about a series, but never let it keep you from something you may end up enjoying, which is really what anime as a whole is about. Hehe i'm sure after this AWA will seem a lot more amazing to be at |

Thanks for the advice Girkon!
Like I mentioned with Priest, I'm finding myself to be a fan of the western genre, and particularly western/horror, which seems to work so well together (Long live Deadlands and Doomtown!). So far I've heard that also along these lines are Trigun and Hellsing, but what are some others that fit this bill? |

Well let's see *flips through collection* here are a few that might suit your western taste.
Outlaw Star.....seriously underrated series.
Wild Arms-A bit silly lookin, but a good style nonetheless
Cowboy Bebop-See you Space Cowboy
For horror there is some to be had that is good.
Paranoia Agent-Not so much horror as psycho suspense thriller, still cool.
Spiral-Yeeeee creepy
Gantz-More adult than the average anime, but very spine tingling.
Thats all I can think of for the moment, but it's a place to start. |

Perfect Blue - Is SUPER scary o.O It's psychological horror and has a lot of themes more tuned to the adult world and the darker side of being famous. I really reckomend it!
Outlaw Star is freakin awesome, so I agree with Girkon, as with Cowboy Bebop and you are definatly on the right track with the anime you are going to watch.
I also reckomend Spriggen, that's another anime movie I really enjoyed. |

I say....if you see something, or read a synapsis/review of it, and think you might like it, try it out. Just like with any other movie or TV show.

I found it to be less scary, more of a mindf**k.
But yeah, I recommend this title as well =D Another brilliant movie by the same director is Millenium Actress.
Also, check out anything from Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki. Titles include Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and most recently, Howl's Moving Castle. They usually dub these pretty well, too, so it's okay to watch them in English. |
