Terin... I'm going to go against the grain here. But what else is new right. I have never been one to follow the crowd.
First off, I know you feel about the "best friend love." There was a girl named Melissa in my life. She still is, but not nearly as much. We played softball together, she worked for me, we did everything together. She said "I love you" to me all the time. I said it back. We even had a fling. A fling I wanted to lead to a relationship. She howerever did not. I told her how I felt and she confirmed that she didn't feel the same way. It was very painful. She is now married and has a child. So I know where you are coming from there. And there isn't any advise I can give you. This is something you have to work yourself through. The one thing I can say is that you MUST move on. It's hard, but you will be ok.
As for breaking up with your gf. Are you sure that is the answer. If you two really are meant to be together, then you can make it work, no matter what the distance. Especially since you know the distance is temporary. I mean when your time in the service is up, were you planning on going to her? And you said you don't wnat to put her through the pain of long distance. Well do you think it will be less pain as not having you at all.
I know you Terin, I had the honor and pleasure of hanging out with you for 3 days at AWA. And you know what, I think she would feel that pain. Think about that. If she doesn't want to deal with the pain of long distance, then let her break it off.
Have you sat down and talked to her about this. I know long distance can be hard, but it can also be very rewarding. Keep these things in mind. You obviously have a lot of people here on PO that care for you and want to see you happy. Why deny yourself that? If you honestly love this girl, and you feel it can work, then try. No one said love was easy. It takes work, and compromise. There will be hard times. But don't think about what MAY come, think about what is here now.
