Heh. Just about 15 minutes ago my sister convinced me to light some firecrackers in the front yard for the amusement of her son Jamie, who is 3. I have to light them because she is afraid to and he is obviously to young to do so. Now, the conditions outside are very windy, I had trouble getting the lighter to work, and the grass is very, very dry. Now, the firecrackers we are talking about here are not huge explosive ones, just some of the smaller ones that make a bit of noise, minimal fire involved. First set goes off wonderfully, I then get handed the second set by my nephew. They too, work just fine. I look at the lawn, no smoke, no visible debris, seems okay. My sister and nephew are staying outside so he can play and such, she is sitting on the front doorstep staring towards the yard. So, I figure no harm in going in, if the grass starts to smoke, its easy to step on. Apparently that is too much to hope for
A bit later, my sister runs inside saying the yard is on fire. My first thought is the yard is smoking a bit and go step on it, or maybe it caught fast and there is a small section burning, no big deal. But alas all was not as I had hoped. I grab a towel and run downstairs, only to see out the front door a huge section of lawn, about 6 square feet, on fire; just simple grass so most of the section is actually already burnt out but the edges are burning merrily. Apparently, she didn't notice the fire starting, or spreading, until it got to that size, even then it took her three year old son pointing it out to her before she noticed it. Anyways, I quick hook up the hose and soak the offending flames, problem solved. But now there is a huge burnt spot in the middle of the yard, which is going to look just lovely come spring , and my dad is not going to be happy. . .
All in all it was the most fun and excitement I have had all day. |

Man, I rememebr times liek that at my dads, only he lit the back acre on fire purposefully to get rid of chiggers and rejuvenate it come spring time. I dunno where you are in relation to the city limits, but the rest of the front could be finished off in a controlled burn and being this close to spring would look like brand new as long as you put some good sod or grass booster on it and watered it properly. |

...That does sound like your sister all right. Sad that her son's more attentive than she is, huh? ^_-
I'm glad you got the fire out 'n all, though. Had me worried in the title. Dad is sooooo not going to be pleased. |

Update:
While I was at class, my parents arrived home from work. Good, I didn't have to be the one to tell them. Bad, I wasn't around to corroborate, or keep in check, the story. Since my parents were also gone when I got home, my dad had a class to go to, I got the shortened version from my sister and it went like this.
Emily:"I told them the truth and explained what happened, and they were cool with it! That means we can do it again." |

You know what that means? You can send smoke signals! Or just burn stuff for the heck of it. |

OH man, Godwyn told me during class about this and my reaction was Jamie's gonna rat them out! I can see him say "Guy-Guy, big fire!!!!" or something around lines of that. So, has Guy actually said anything to you yet? 'Cause I figure no matter what Emily says, he still was probably *coughs* a little angry...
You know what this mean now that you can do this again? We can have a bonfire and roast marshmellows next time we come over!!!!! *Smiles* MMMMMmmmmm marshmellows.... |
