In the darkened city, even at the unholy hours, work continues. Even when the fewest people are up, cars still bicker. Freight shipments, police patrols, taxi cabs join the ranks of the night. In front of an apartment building a man leans over to express delight in his partner for the night, then she walks alone through the door. He looks after her, sighs, then walks on. Guardedly, the man glances behind both to secure himself and to express a dying hope for company. Golden street lights illuminate wide open spaces, leaving the corners black to gather what they will. A man at a faded blue pay phone yells at another on the other end of the line expressing untold anger. Towers of steel, protected by graying marble, powerful towers green with wealth, have great gates built facing the main avenue, but the workers prefer to leave through a small door on the side of the building, clustered in groups: There is power in numbers. On the fifty-second floor, the window is illuminated by the glow of a computer monitor. On the screen is a balance sheet showing red.

Next to the monitor, a man, alone, pooled in red releases a hollow barrel. He never holds anything again; not a mouse, not a door handle, not a phone, not a woman, not a stick shift, and never again to hold a soul.
