I like the Pluralism idea combined with the very first rule...think of everyone else. I actually started writing on this subject last night. Everything is all right as long as we don't tread on anyone's feelings or ideals...but you kind of have to when you trade in cultural ideas. The only way around it is to be totally open to 'experiancing' the new ideals. I really believe that is why we have so many arguments on what is 'right' and 'wrong'. We all become used to the way we do things, the things we do best and are easiest for us...this is how we base our opinions. So how do we get around it?

Rule...something.

Be open to the idea that all opinions are valid in a certain frame of mind, in a certain place, at a certain time. Just because you don't believe it will work for you, doesn't it won't work for someone else.

Rule...something 2.

If someone voices an opinion and backs it with personal experiences on why they believe it is valid and useful then perhaps you should use it. If they base it blankly with no backing other than 'it's what I believe' then it is best to say, 'okay, glad it works for you.' and leave it at that.

My 2 denarii.

Why do we insist in believing we are masters of our surroundings when we fail so miserably to master ourselves?

12. Try to put others before yourself. Sometimes it's good to self-sacrifice a bit to make someone else's day good. (And no, it's not always being selfish to do good things. I don't care what anyone says on that matter. I'm a nice guy because I choose to be nice not because it makes me feel better.)

13. Be good just to be good. Not for a reward. Not for yourself. Be good to someone else just because. You don't need a particular reason. Just be good.

That makes me think of some lyrics in a song I know ... a very nice song.

14. Don't kill the child in you, live thru the child within. You might not control the aging of your body, but you can decide to forever be young at heart. It doesn't mean being reckless, and vain; it means remaining innocent and pure. But don't confuse innocence and naivety ...

aye, and the arguing is due to absolutism, which is people who feel they are right, and that they are certain they are right, and thtat they know the truth.

instead of arguing, we should learn. As Hospers put it in his dialogue, to make a rational decision, we need to be Free, Enlightened, and Impartial, and the only way is to be open to everything.

I'll thinkup a rule eventually...as far as that, i think i'll keep my trap shut Very Happy

17. (I'll stick Graillik's in as 15 and 16) - Nobody should ever have to work a job they abhor simply to be able to provide for their basic needs.

Dude, nice one.

18. Always believe in yourself before others. Don't follow someone else's beliefs just to fit in. Never become someone else to accomodate(sp?) somebody else.

Uh oh...I don't mean to pull this off track, but I would like to point out rule 18 and how wonderful it works on paper but is easily a horrid downfall. I submit sub 18. and add to it 'As long as these ideas do not directly conflict with the overall happiness of all.'

I also believe it is this idea of 'individualism' that brings about hate and misunderstanding...I feel a new topic coming on.
