A viral problem

PM's got something going on with her computer, probably because some one was using a P2P program. I've tried to do a search on it, but I don't get any good info.

the virus name is Win32.Startpage.NS and appearently it's a trojan.

The thing is causing her internet to crash and occasionally restart her PC. If anybody has any good sites for info, or any info about this virus, please let me know.

Install an Anti-Virus. First things first.

Go to the Symantec info center and do a search on the trojan for instructions on how to remove it without the help of an AV.

Well, she's got two anti virus programs already, and this thing just keeps coming up. I'm thinking we'll need to get a good firewall, but I'll try that to remove it. Thanks!

Then there's several things can can happen from here:

A) You keep removing the worm but it keeps coming back from somewhere else, and I don't think even a firewall will stop it.

B) The worm is either quarantined, or it's stored in a place where your AntiVirus can't go (such as a zipped file - they can only quarantine from there, not repair)

C) Your computer problems are unrelated, and the worm happens to be there by coincidence. That's my favorite option, since usually a worm is there to steal passwords and mass-mail itself. Internet disconnections aren't part of what a worm would usually do.

Also, your reboot might be a Windows 2K/XP doohickey. Right click on MY COMPUTER > Properties > Advanced > Startup And Recovery, and uncheck "Reboot automatically".
