I'm in Baghdad. My choices for anime are sorta slim pickens. I'm looking for some good title ideas. Prefering series over movies. If anyone's got any ideas, I'm all open to 'em. I prefer usually to buy in the store and be able to see it, ya know? Feel sorta...blind here. Anyways. Any imput is appreciated. |

Well, Fruits Basket is just hands down a wonderful title to watch if you like shojo manga, and the same would go for Ceres, Celestial Legend.
Personally, I just picked up all of Full Metal Panic! and find it a wonderful mix of Mecha, military conspiracy, and high school hijinx.
Good luck to you picking those up to pass the time over in Baghdad, and keep yourself safe; we'll be thinking of you |

fruits basket IS good, but has nothing on Ai Yori Aoshi!! ^_^
if you're looking for just movies, I highly reccomend Perfect Blue (Psy-thriller)
Other than that, Vampire Hunter D & VHD: Bloodlust is good. Escaflowne is a pretty good series, though I haven't been able to watch the movie. Hmmm, A movie to stay away form would be X. LOL I dunno what it is about that movie it's just horrible. Kenshin (Samurai X) is another great title, then there's Naruto of course. Hmmm, Samurai Deeper Kyo is great too.

Hmm...Serieseseses....
Fushigi Yuugi is long, but it is also very touching, and made me cry lots.
Slayers (any series of three), is one of my favorites too! Packed full of laughs.
Amazing Nurse Nanako is a very fan-servicy anime, but it's hilarious, and actually has a nice story line. I think it's great, even for something borderline hentai
Noir is a good action/drama series as well. Those are my picks ^^
As for movies...anything from Studio Ghibli

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but I have pretty diverse tastes in Anime, so I'll just suggest a few of my favourites:
Fruits Basket-- as mentioned, it's rather lighthearted for the most part. It's cute without being too saccharine and without the disgusting girl/boy love stuff. It's really more about friendship. Plus, there's actual plot development and character development which is really nice.
Crest of the Stars-- Science fiction. A bunch of blue-haired elves from an outer space empire take over earth without so much as a fight. It covers the story of son of the man who gave earth over and the princess (though she certainly doesn't show it) of the Empire as they go through all sorts of crazy battles with the United Mankind. It's really slow moving, centering a -lot- on plot and it uses a lot of technical stuff as truly good Science Fiction always does, but the battles are gorgeous and the characters really feel real.
Bubblegum Crisis 2040-- Sci-fi/mecha. Four women in mechanical armor take on a city full of rogue androids. It's really fast-paced after the first episode (which sucks because it centers on the most annoying character in the series, Linna) and there are always new twists added in. Some of it is pretty predictable, but it's worth it for the sheer amount of explosions/bada$$ characters/ mecha.
Saiyuki- Four guys and a miniature dragon-turned jeep looking for holy scriptures and fighting demons. This is primarily comedic, but there's a lot of good plot going on as well. The anime doesn't show it quite as much, but there's a slight shounen-ai undertone (well, really, when the main characters are all male, you sort of expect that). There's never any actual shouen-ai action, though. Just hints. I like it primarily for the dragon. <3 and the comedy aspect.
I'd suggest Battle Royale as well, but the best part of that is the book. The manga is incredibly graphic (both with bloodshed, which is fun, and the sex, which I could do without) and the movie...well, it's a Japanese live-action. You do the math. I love all of them, but the book is definitely the way to go if you only want one of them. No series yet, though that would kick arse.
Edit: Forgot a few! . I'm such a geek.
Someday's Dreamers-- very light. There's no romance crap, but it's really a pretty girly anime nonetheless. It follows the story of a girl named Yume who has magical abilities in a modern-type setting. She becomes apprenticed to a man (who very strongly resembles Shigure from Fruits Basket >_> <_<) who is supposed to teach her about using her magic powers, etc. She makes friends with a few other people, attempts to help people..that sort of thing. There doesn't seem to be any big plot in it so far, mostly just a story of her exploring her own abilities and learning.
Witch Hunter Robin-- Just about exactly how it sounds. Modern day setting again, with people able to use magic abilities (you only get one ability, though. Sort of like X-men only they call them witches). It's a little like X-files the first few episodes, where they're all stand-alone missions, and then you get into the real heavy plot around the eleventh episode or something like that. Also like the X-files, I wasn't really as impressed with the plot-heavy episodes, because it got a little convoluted there, but it's still worth watching for the very uber cool hacker. |

Full Metal Alchemist-A great series for beginners and seniors alike. It has a deep plot followed with loads of good characters and character development. There's lots of action with humor filled inbetween. I recommend without stop. |
