My friend just got out of the hospital, where, unbeknownst to me, she was taken, after a four day drinking binge. She is somewhere on the order of my mother's age, between 47 and 53, and she has run out of strength to cope with what life continues to throw at her. She is jobless, has even less self esteem than I do, and this makes her afraid to apply herself to the process of finding a job. After losing her job in 2001, owing to a drinking problem, she entered a losing battle with depression.

When I met her last year, she had troubles with her boyfriend, who is out of control, but who is also the one part of the household who still holds a job. She takes one pleasure in life, and that is in spending time with her dog, a ten-year-old pug. (He even looks cute in pictures.) One little dog has proven to be inadequate to stem the tide of pain that has been growing in her for so long.

When I talked to her today, having just punched out, she was just out of the hospital, and so weak she could barely lift her groceries from cart to car. I stood and listened to her for half an hour...and was at a loss. I, who take what little pride I have from the words that emerge from my heart, had nothing to say. Here, at last, is a problem that is completely beyond my ability to solve. When she got into her car, she looked at me, and said, "Thank you for you kindness. Will you say a prayer for me tonight?"

And I didn't have the heart to tell her I don't pray.

So here I come, crawling to the feet of you, my longtime friends, who were once the source of strength that got me through my own shit. I beg a prayer, for one who has suffered more than her fair share in this heartless game of life. Please.

Tell your friend that she's in my thoughts as well. I don't tend to pray either (this thread isn't about religion, or I'd explain more), but I will send positive karmic vibes her way. ^^

It sounds like she's got it really tough. But, as long as you're there for her, and her other friends are there for her, she'll make it through. Heavens know whenever I feel down, I just think of all the people who I've been blessed to know and who care about me, and that alone gives me strength.

I don't pray but I send my hopes and wish that your friend will be better.
Maybe the best thing you can do for her is show her that life is as beautiful as it is harsh. Show her that her life has meaning somehow.

I'm off for a walk in the clear night that we have right now ... I'll climb in my favorite tree, sit back, and pray to the stars. May they bring warmth and light to her cold and dark nights.

Well wishing is as good as a prayer in the grand scheme of things as long as it's sincere. She is in my heart and I will speak with whatever powers will listen with compassion and mercy.

Well Therin, here is what I believe. I do believe in prayer. I also believe that God watches over everyone, whether they believe He is or not.

What you wrote, that was your prayer. And I believe that God heard that prayer.

And me sitting hear, hoping that your friend makes it through these tough times, whether I officially call it a prayer or not, God hears it. At least that's what I believe.

Good things happen to good people. That's what I believe. Be there for her and tell her to hang in there. Support from the people she knows and cares about will be the most important thing for her right now.

I hope she does well. Much as the darkness closes in on us, if we remember that if we but hold a candle to it, it cannot consume us.
