And yes, it's partially because I'm a member of the place that got it. So expect a rather partisan view to appear.
Anyway, I got an IM this morning (actually, I was asleep when it came across the wire) from one of my friends asking a rather strange question:
bandman2000 wrote: | Unit, you might need to check the ------.org website. I think it's been hacked. All I get is a black screen with a red sentence of "Owned by ][GB][ Let me know what's going on. |
Well, I couldn't access the front from home, but when I got to work, there it was, staring me in the face. Now, at this point, I'm actaully not mad, and I haven't been all day, because I've said this about it: "Why, look. The children came out to play today."
This is about all I can say, and I notified our webmaster as soon as I saw the message to check into things. He's working on making backups.
Now, the thing that aggravates me most is that if you know the website, it's basically a spot for people who are interested in chivalrous behavior in the modern age to notice that each other exists. We're not peddling much other than harmony with your fellow man, in the spirit of Knighthood. If we were some sort of hate site, then we would have gotten our just rewards, I suspect.
What ticks me off is that, most likely, a child with free time and an internet connection did this. It would seem very odd for someone to carry a grudge of any sort against the organization on the website. It could be a grudge against one of the other sites that exist (probably personal pages), but I suspect that the server owner wouldn't tolerate sites that might deserve a defacement. So we were the victims of a random prank. The fact that I can't see any particular reason for malice is the reason I'm shrugging it off, for the most part.
Still, it annoys me greatly that someone would target the site, even if it was a random sort of thing, because they probably didn't take enough time out to actually erad the site they were defacing.
Thank you for listening. I'm still somewhere in the mode between full-on rage and dismissing it out of hand. |

That reminds me of the time PSOtakus got hacked. I think we got hit twice by hackers and once by una's salsa. But yeah, getting "NOL'ED" for no reason is the pits. Why don't those punks that do these things learn that it isn't cool or smart to do this sort of crap. |

Most of the "owned by whatever" hacks aren't even done actively - they're done by bots that simply scour the web and hit everything that corresponds to their criterias. Recent victims: PHP-based message boards. |

now we got lazy hackers? This whole world is complacent. Not that I am saying that the hackers should've done more...but man everyone is lazy nowadays! But yeah that all sucks.

sorry to hear that though dude, its a bit sad when other people try to spoil others fujn for the sake of it. its not like there could have been any personal gain from it. afterall what have they achieved exactly? the admin having to use a bit more of their time to get tihngs running again? meh makes you sick |

It's been this way ever since. Viruses and worms are "bots" in a sense since they operate without any command from their owners. Just a few lines of code caused the Melissa flood, the Love Bug, MyDoom, etc.
Plus, there's a growing population on the internet. What does that mean? More script kiddies and people who destroy just for the sake of destroying. |
