Well, the guys made 1.6 billion SO FAR, so power to him, the guy revolutionised how merchandising works, by doing it all in house ^_^

Hats off to him.

It hardly pisses me off, heck he's done the merchendising since the very first Star Wars so it's not something new. If one man can take the industry and manipulate it so well then he is either a freakin genius or he has power of the force in some way. In any case he makes movies that captivate the imagination if nothing else, so I have to give him credit for making it last this long. Plus I can't stay mad at the guy XD

Edit-Since I saw a documentary about it, I can say with confidence that at least yoda on a cereal box is better than C-3PO.....no lyin

Well Lucas is no genious, he is a hack lol.
He did good with the original trilogy, but he has just been rideing the coat tails since then. Tell me what was the last movie lucas has done of any substance not star wars related?

I don't think bands selling out can be compared with how lucas has sold out. when a band sells out they change thier music to be more popular. Lucas is just whoreing the star wars name to any one who will pay him a buck. its literally every where right now. and merchandising is nothing new I have some star wars toys and what not, but come on, do you really want chewbaca on your raisin bran?

To me this whoring of the name just prooves thar Lucas is no longer an artist, if he ever was, he is just a money whore. It is ultimatly his product, but from an artistic point of view its just plain wrong lol.

Yeah, but while YOU may not want Chewbacca on your raisin bran, there are COUNTLESS Star Wars junkies out there who do. And as long as there is a market, why not capitalize on it? That's just the way the business works, and there's nothing inherently wrong with it, as long as you're not forcing anything on anyone, which Lucas most certainly isn't doing.

An as far as the bands go, yes, there are sellouts. BUT, often times, people just like to complain because the band starts making money, and they have some selfish vision in their head that what the band is doing is solely for them. The perfect example is Green Day. They got crucified when they released Dookie. They were "sell outs" and people stopped listening to them because they decided that they should try to make some money so that they could eat, live, etc. And you know what, Dookie was pretty much their best album...then they go and release American Idiot and blow everyone away.

How about THX 1138? Or American Graffitti? Or Indiana Jones?

Who said it had to be totally artistic. It's a sci fi film for cryin out loud. It shouldn't stop you from enjoying the films nonetheless. It's hardly a reason to hate someone, as I consider hate to be a strong word that hardly seems to apply to one person and their chosen career path.

THX 1138 was ok and so was American Graffiti, but he did those before he made it big with SW. As for Indiana Jones Spielberg directed them, and I doubt they would not have been as good if Lucas had.
Did you know other people directed the original trilogy for Lucas? Then he got it in his head he is a genius and can do it all, and I think episodes I and II show he can't.

Now I don't think a band is sold out just because they make money. But Lucas most certainly has. But no, it’s none of my business what he does with it, but it is just kind of a shame to see how much he has sold out. And don’t try to tell me he hasn’t sold out, cause some one who makes movies for the art, or even just love of thier craft, wouldn't sell their legacy to the highest bidder. . .o wait I mean any bidder

I really don’t care too much, I am still ganna go see Ep. III. I just think it’s a shame.

I never said hate, I dislike him but I dont hate him. Mainly because he is a hack.

alot of what hes made from the star wars series hes put back into movies with the likes of THX, Skywalker Sound and Industrial Light and Magic

and in fact he directed A New Hope, but others directed Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi because he couldnt afford a director for a new hope

To ask a possibly silly question, could it be an arrangement more like cartoonists have with syndicates - the cartoonist retains very few property rights to the work and signs over the exploitation rights to the syndicate to do what they want with.

It could very well be the corporation's decision (of which Lucas's input may or may not be welcome or available all the time) to make all of this money. Additionally, you have to find the money to make more movies from somewhere. Exploitation just happens to be pretty good if the franchise is selling well.
