ok, im currently hosted by a firm called freewebhost, but the past fortnight theyve been having ALOT of down time, and their ftp server seems to have crashed too.

they offered a gig of webspace with unlimited bandwidth. does anyone know of anything like this? im broke so cant afford to pay for hosting but have too much stuff planned to use a smaller ammount of space.

its for a phantasy star online site that somebody has asked me to help them on while people at gamepulse are studying

http://www.dreamfusion.net is a small operation that offers VERY nice prices and packages, and they have a special going on right now you might wanna check out. As a matter of fact, I just recently e-mailed them with some basic questions about web services since Im a total web services n00b and look at this cool response I got. Judging from what Im seeing here and on their website, I plan on doing business with them personally.

Hi Jace,

Our business model is our secret Smile
But seriously, you should make sure that your webhost is fast, stable, and responsive, both with support requests and their sites themselves so you can get help when you want it. Our sales/accounts departments are generally not open 24x7 though sometimes you will get a reply from us when we're actually off, but you should always get a support reply within 30 minutes. Feel free to email me personally if you don't ( severn@dreamfusion.net ). Some hosts may also openly provide support for client side problems (for example, web development software, internet problems, etc.), we unfortunately can only provide limited support in that given the vast amount of software that you can use, but we will try our best to help (we won't just simply say "it's your problem" and leave it at that).

You should also try out their control panel so you can get a "feel" for it (you can try out ours at http://cp01.dreamfusion.net/cpanel login:cp01demo password:demodemo). Some technical support services will not help you with problems uploading files or learning how to use the control panel. Many hosts (us included) offer an application called "Fantastico" which will automatically install many common scripts for you, such as a bulletin board or a blog or a photo gallery ( see here for a sample gallery http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?set_albumName=samples&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php ). Some hosts also offer their own easy web development utilities (we're looking into providing one right now), give you free advertising credits, or provide phone support. We've found that both our support staff and our clients aren't too pleased with waiting on hold on the phone line as well as it costing us way too much to keep our prices low.

For a personal site, our starters plan is probably the best as from your description, it doesn't sound like you'll need the larger disk space or bandwidth that our higher plans offer. If your site does become very popular or you need more resources, you could always upgrade by paying the difference and we'll take care of moving your old service to your new.

I've found Macromedia's Dreamweaver to be the most appealing and useful of web page development tools. It has a nice feature where you can split its display between site design and code to make learning HTML easier. If you want to get serious with cool content and graphics like Flash (I'm sure you've seen the "punch the monkey and win" or "knock down an ipod etc. ads when surfing), they offer a whole suite of utilities. If you have Microsoft Office, Frontpage is a decent editor with some decent looking templates to start off with. Once you get familiar with a tool, you might want to start learning graphic design or HTML and PHP ( www.w3schools.org ) so you can create more complex sites with specific designs or effects. For free solutions, you can try Nvu ( www.nvu.com ), I've heard of some good things about it, but I haven't actually personally tried it.

Sorry for being longwinded, and feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions or comments Smile

Thanks,

I looked through the pages at freewebspace.net, and onesite.com looks like an awesome host, with the only downside being that you have to use the banners they put on your page. I might get something through them.
