Setup:
AMD 3200+ processor
1 gig pc3200 kingston dual channel ram (2 x 512)
Sapphire Radeon 9600xt
160 gig Western Digital IDE hdd
Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard
Windows SP2
My computer likes to randomly reboot itself. The problem with the problem is that it isn't consistant. Sometimes it only takes an hour, sometimes it only takes weeks. What happens is that randomly, the computer will act as if it is powered off - monitor goes into standby, PC stays on but ceases to function for about 10-30 seconds before starting up Windows again. Mcafee and AVG both say I am virus free.
- First time it happened, I checked the floppy drive after putting a diskette in.
- Second time it happened, I was talking on MSN, IRC, and AIM
- Third time it happened, was doing the above while watching anime using Windows Media Player.
Took it in to where I bought it, they replaced the power supply thinking that may be the issue since it also made a weird smell. To top it off they ran a burn in program, to make the computer's hardware run at 100% load, for 52 hours problem free before they turned the computer off.
Running Zonealarm for firewall as well as Mcafee for virus scan with AVG as an additional virus scan. Both say no viruses. Problem occured before and after using AMD cool and quiet, cpu temp running round 35C normal and up to 49C under stress. Mobo around 30C.
I'm at a loss as to what this can be, any input is appreciated |

Hmmm... I have heard of this with Windows ME.
Are you using XP home or pro?
Let me check around and see if I can find anything. |

I would sugest running a stress test that boots from disk or CD.
That would let you know if it was the OS or hardware.
If you have fans other than the processor fan on your mobo check those.
Those are the two steps I would take to start off with. |

Good suggestion.
However I don't think temperature is your problem unless your hardware has gone bad.
That's an XP chip right?
The AMD Athlon XP 3200+ is a V rated chip which means the die temp of it is 85°C. You said under stress it goes to 49C which is well within range. |

There maybe other chips on the mobo that require fans. I was not refering to the processor. |

I had some bad reboot problems when one of my video cards was overheating - the fan on it had died, even though everything else worked fine. One I figured that part out, (and was gifted with a nice new vid card) the reboots went away. (Although on particularly hot days they sometimes return.) |

True, he mentioned the Mobo was running at about 30C, so I guess it depends on what the Mobo can handle and if there are other points that are high in temp that are not giving the necessary feedback.
Either way, you can never have too many fans. |

Just remember the words of a wise man

Even though it has 10 fans only 4 are on the outside of the case.
You should hear it when I turn the fans up to 11.
But I digress. The therminal velocity of my PC has nothing to do with the subject at hand.
Let us know if we have helped at all. |
