Question for those Hardware techies,
Right now I'm running 2x 512mb sticks of DDR2 PC3200
I'm lookin to upgrade to 2x1024mb sticks of DDR2 PC4200
Now my motherboard is compatible with both types of memory which isn't a problem, however is it wise to to leave my old memory in there adding my total RAM total to 3gb? Or should I remove the old memory and leave it at the new 2 gb? I've heard it's best to use memory that's from the same brand. I haven't heard anything about mixing memory speeds though. I thought I'd ask the knowledgeable Very Happy

For reference, Here's my motherboard.
The pretty memory I want.

If you mix speeds with just about anything they will run at the slowest of the speeds. If you place a ATA/33 bus cdrom drive and a ATA/133 bus hard drive on the same IDE channel that channel will run at 33mb/sec.

Could that run into problems or is it safe?
Because frankly I'd like to use that RAM as it's very bang for the buck.
Later on i'll probably replace the 2x512s with more of the same but for now it should be cool right? No exploding or whatnot? It should still function as 3 gigs of RAM without like self destructing?

Considering you'll hardly get past 2 GBs of RAM usage, it's better to ditch the pair of 512s altogether. Besides, Windows and/or your computer have a RAM limit that's either 2 GBs or 4, don't remember... Otherwise, you'll have 3 gigs to work with, but they'll work at the speed of your old RAM.

You know I've heard that but I wasn't quite sure what the limit was.
I'll probably remove the 512s then.
Thanks for the help guys Very Happy!

And in the interest of saving space and not having to create a new topic.
Would it be a good idea to up the power supply,
I'm planning to get a brand spanking new Video card and with the addition of brand new RAM (not for a while) should I replace my 400watt power supply with something more powerful or should I be good? I think I ought to be good, but I know having more power means more power consumption so I'm not too sure. *still learning*

This is a calculator that will tell you what is REQUIRED. It is a good idea to get more than you need.

Thank you very much!
I believe I should be good with my 400 watts.
Rock on =D

Are there any other staple websites like that, that are really handy for upgrades/servicing?

You can never have too much ram, just like you can never have too much hard drive space or processing power. give me about 20mins and 3d studio max and i can peg any systems CPU usage and ram Twisted Evil
