Before I reply to everyone, I just wanted to mention that this topic wasn't exactly intended as a "vegetarian recruitment program." X)! Mostly, I was trying to be informative, being as there are a lot of misconceptions.

I tend to not hassle people about what they choose to chow down on. I am an omnivore - I will eat most eatable things, but I prefer to eat nice healthy fresh food, rather than fast-food crappyness > : P

I prefer sea-food over meat, probably why I like alot of orientle foody goodness XD But I can't resist a good slab of rare-cooked steak if I can ever afford it *drool*. I like the taste and the texture of meat, its just that simple. I have eaten vegitarian food before - soybean lasagne, for example, and it was delicious ^.^

What I HIGHLY disagree on is animal cruelty, doesnt matter if its 'food' or not. Animal cruelty is wrong no matter what the situation is.

I would say that you have a very healthy lifestyle =) Avoiding fast foods and eating less red meat and more fresh veggies and such. Also, it's kind of refreshing to see someone that doesn't have an aversion to vegetarian food--most people I've known think that because it's vegetarian, it must be bad. XD

I don't like animal cruelty, either. But there are some vegetarians that do the whole "meat is murder!" thing (where, in their opinion, any meat consumption is "murder") and bash anyone that eats meat and throw red paint on people in fur coats, and I think that is wrong, too.

But being a meat eater, it doesn't hurt to have some meat in your diet. Now me, I eat way too much. In fact, i consume probably more than that table that Scrum put up above. But if you watch yourself, eat some of the right foods, and limit the amount of things you eat, your good as gold.

The only thing I don't agree with on the Vegetarian side of things is when people claim they are vegetarians because they thing its cruel to kill the animals. Just my opinion...that's all.

You are correct =) There is no harm in eating meat as long as you are well balanced. And just because a person is a vegetarian doesn't mean they can escape this--they have to eat well-balanced meals, as well. It should be a general rule for life =)

Heh. I had a friend in high school that did that. And would you believe it, she is no longer vegetarian. XD I think it's a very superficial reason to become a vegetarian, although my husband admitted to me that he became a vegetarian partically because of "meat guilt." XD

Well u guys are right, except one glass of milk has about 12% of what u need for the day NOT 100%
Another problem though is allot of your B vitamins can only be gotten through meats, they do have supplements for it now, but my understanding is that pill is actually ground up insects such as locust lol.

Sorry....the information I posted wasn't exactly complete. One 8oz. glass of Silk soy milk contains all of the amino acids (variations of proteins) that your body needs, ei it's a "complete" source of protein (the vegetarian way of saying "intead of mixing and matching, you can get all of your proteins here"). It doesn't contain all of the protein that your body needs for one day.

As for B vitamins, I take a multivitamin to ensure I get all of the B vitamins that I need, and also, I eat Marmite (one serving of Marmite, which I eat every day for breakfast, contains all of the B12 you need for one day). I don't need no stinkin' ground up insects. XD

oooh I used to be a vegetarian. I really should go back to it. on the protein thing though, did you know that calcium in your bones is broken down by animal proteins INCLUDING the ones in milk. So all this extra protein people eat contributes to osteoperosis

Correct! I always thought it was sad and ironic that milk actually breaks down the calcium in bones x_x Soy milk, on the other hand, doesn't contain an overage of proteins, and also supplies calcium =)

That's a person-to person thing, same as meat eaters. XD

I looked all over for protein enriched soy milk and the best i could find is 9g of protein. That's not even half in a small girl....

Yeah, but do you think that the only thing a vegetarian would eat/drink all day is a glass of soy milk? Wink I eat toast or cereal for breakfast (2 slices of wheat/full grain toast = 6 grams of protein), usually reheat some sort of leftover for lunch XD which can be anything from pasta (7g protein) with tofu (roughly 13g protein) and veggies, maybe a stir-fry (cooked with olive oil Wink or possibly a veggie burger (20g protein).

Take a look at the protein charts on that page (scroll down a little bit). As you can see, there are still plenty of ways to get protein =)

True....but ya didn't even post the fact that I said good for you Smile

I've actually tried veggie burgers...not bad I must say. Of course with Vegetarianism I can still get my carbs that I need for running as well.

Good arguments Smile

End of line

if im right senor...isnt that 9g of protein found in one serving?

Additionally, i have to agree, the thing about most vegitarians is that htey do it more for a popularity base rather than the real healthfood reason.
*explodes*

I'd have to say I don't agree with that. Alot of them probably. But most meat animals in America are crammed in cages too small for them, the dead aren't removed, and they're often fed their own kind. Kinda creepy. Most I would say do it for the health reasons. I always felt better when eating no meat. Read "Diet for a New America" it's a really great book, kinda old and some things are a little outdated but overall good.
on the other side, vegetarians, watch your soy intake! there are new studies that are showing there's a fine balance between good and bad soy consumption. Especially for women. If you're eating soy at every meal, it's too much. It can lead to reproductive tract problems in you AND YOUR FUTURE DAUGHTERS. Scary huh?
