This looks absolutely interesting. << One of the few movies this year I'm actually kind of interested in. And I usually don't like modern war movies. It's got that hard-a$$ humor that I'm starting to like lately.
I will be waiting. ^^ |

I went into Jarhead expecting more than what I got out of it. I think you are too, which is why I think you should think carefully about this review.
Jarhead is about nothing. Its not about nothing in that plucky Azumanga Daioh way. Its not about nothing in that flat but unexpected Seinfield way. Its not even about nothing in its own way. Well...thats really not fair. Jarhead IS about something, there are definate ideas and expressions regarding the pointlessness of war, a great bit about militarylike brother hood, the fringes of sanity, and the hieghts of anticpation and the sting of dissapointment.
What got me most about Jarhead was that, at the end, I didn't feel like anything had resolved. Just like Marine Sowyer (or whatever his name was), I was put through 120 minutes of desert that really didn't amount to anything. In that since, the movie does a good job of conveying the feelings of its main character - but those aren't the feelings I go to a movie to get. If I want that bored, slightly comfused feeling, I wake up in the morning. Movies are to give me some other feeling.
But Im not slandering a decent movie. The cinematography was excellent. There were several moments were you felt very connected to the movie - the horse in the oil field and the burned highway marked me specifically. There are several good hurmours moments in there as well, but inbetween marines finding out their wives are leaving them or signing release forms and wavers, its hard to keep a good pace.
Jarhead is a rent, there no reason you need to go see this in the theater. And frankly, theres really no reason you need to see it at all other than your just curious as to how it all comes out. Theres better movies out there for you to rent, but this'll do. Just don't expect a whole lot out of it. |

On a note from someone in the service, this hit home. Alot of this movie is really what we go through. The waiting, the anticipation, the futility of many things. This movie is what war REALLY is like. In either case, I'd still put it on my top ten list. I'd have to say it's a movie you'll have to see yourself though. |
