Now i'm not sure if this topic has been touched on before, but it's something i'm curious about. Now the hobby bug has hit me and once I have the money I was thinking of doing tabletop games. Most likely Warhammer 40,000 unless anyone has suggestions, and was wondering if any in the Georgia area collects them as well or was interested. Since we could end up making a group out of it, i'm sure it would be a lot of fun.

Honestly I tried getting into Warhammer 40k once and I came to a few realizations...
A) I suck at Painting Miniatures.
B) I suck at Painting.
C) Painting Sucks when you can't Paint.
D) Learning to Paint is confusing/frustrating.
E) I suck at Learning to Paint.
F)Miniatures are Expensive.
G)I don't have Money.
H)Hobbies involving Miniatures Suck when you Can't Paint and Don't Have Money.

Warhammer is pretty awesome but as previously mentioned, It's a -very- expensive habit. On the plus side there's alot of customization and personality in the game if you learn how to assemble custom figurines and paint them in your own unique way.

The 40k mythos are really interesting, I actually own a Space Wolves codex myself as they are my token army. The Space Wolves are a chapter of the Space Marines that are basically barbarians/werewolves. It's pretty awesome Very Happy It's a really interesting game, just very costly and time consuming. But if you need a good hobby then you've found it. I'd probably be more into it if more people were into it. If we had a consistent group setup I could see myself warhammering it up, otherwise I'm on the fence.

MTG is the way to go. If you can get ahold of some cards, I'll teach you how to play.

But, for warhammer 40k talk to K-Chan.

Eh...As much as I love Magic, the real thrill comes from Competitive gameplay and the problem with games like magic is that they require you to stay on the pulse of the game at all times to know what's in circulation and what you -need-. If you're not looking into any of that, Magic can be pretty casual fun with a few buddies. If you do get into Magic, you've got at least me and Therin to play with so maybe it won't be too bad. Pick yourself up a starter deck and some packs, then work around till you find what you're comfortable playing with and from there who knows, maybe we can look into getting into some tournaments. Course that would probably put all three of us on equal ground as I feel Therin and I are greatly out of touch with the competitive pulse. I know Ming and Tobias are pretty big on the game, they can probably give you some pointers as well.

I have Apprentice on Chris' computer. Once you learn how to play, it's awesome for designing decks and such. Speaking of which...*goes off to do so*

The painting really isn't that bad. Your first couple of tries will naturally suck but its amazing what you can turn out with a little practice. Besides its no big deal if you do mess up, spray it to black and start over.

The problem with Warhammer is that, as mentioned, it is expensive, but it is fairly accessible in the Georgia area. There is a Games Workshop in both Discovery Mills Mall and the Mall of Georgia. They have tournaments every so often which are long but my brother always had a lot of fun. Also nearer to you Girkon up on exit 10 somewhere there is an independent trader that sells and hosts small tournaments. I'll have to find out from if they are still in business next time I go home.

I love the lore of Warhammer, specifically 40K. Now might actually be a good time to get involved, cause I think the summer campaing is supposed to be 40dK. Actually it was supposed to be last year but they decided to run with the Orc business. I don't really know that much about it anymore since my brother got his own car and didn't need me to shuttle him back and forth to the game store.

Get ready to spend some serious money. Back when I used to play, the starter set with the rulebooks and starter miniatures ran around $79.99. It came with the dice and some cardboard scenery too.

Of course, you'll need paint. $19.99 will buy you a starter paint set. Those brushes will run out quickly though, so get ready to spring another $20 on high quality brushes.. the smaller they get, the more expensive they get. You'll quickly want more variety in colors too, bottles of GW paints run a few bucks each I think.

Then comes the most expensive part.. the minis themselves. A full army will run you $199 or more, with inidividual squads going for $20-40 easily. Vehicles start at $20, and they charge quite a bit for the bigger ones like tanks. You'll need a codex for your army too, which lists all the units and their stats, and special weapons rules and such. I think those go for $20-50 depending on the size.

And if you want to enhance your tabletop with scenery, you can either make it yourself or buy it from GW. Then there's the time investment in painting your minis. Some view it as half the fun though..

I loved Warhammer 40k back in the mid 90's, but it got too expensive and too time consuming for me, especially considering the lack of opponents in my town at that time. If you have lots of opponents and places to play, I say more power to you. I wish I had a local game center to play it at, I might pick it up again in that case.

All the more reason to move to Georgia eh? ^_~

As for the cost, I see it more for me as a hobby in progress, I may not be able to get it all at once. More like gradually save some here and there where I can and then spend as needed. It may take longer, but thats how it will work for me
