OK so it's time to get organized.
I went to the Relay Rally and got some info.
When and Where | From Friday May 2 7:00PM to Sat May 3 2003 10:00AM at Centennial High School. | Why | Relay For Life is a unique, fun way to rais money for the American Cancer Society while increasing cancer awareness in the community | What | Relay For Life involves teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns walking or running around a track relay style, for the duration of the event. It is a noncompetitive, team-building event. Participants from the community come from businesses, industry, churches, schools, neighborhoods and other organizations. Teams are formed to rally in support of a co-worker or loved on who is fighting or has lost the battle with cancer. | Fundraising | Each team member pays a registration fee of $10 and is asked to raise a minimum of $100 in donations to support the American Cancer Society's programs of research, cancer control and patient services. Participants receive Talk Relay, a community Relay newsletter, which is full of information about the relay, as well as information on how to raise the money. Corporate Sponsors are secured to help underwrite costs and encourage community involvement. | Impact | Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society, and is held in every state in the nation as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. Last year, this relay comtributed more than $230,000. | Fun | Teams camp around the track and participate in a variety of activities while waiting their turn to Relay. From line dancing and live bands to messages for walkers, we have something for all. With awards given for Best Decorated Campsite, Best Team Sperit, there is fun competition for everyone. | Healing | It has been said that Relay For Life is one huge support group for cancer survivors. Agreeing with that theory, the first lap is led by cancer survivors who wear T-shirts declaring "I Am Winning." Later, at 10:00PM, a Luminary Ceremony is held. The bagged votives which are sold prior to and during the event, burn throughout the event and serve as a reminder to all participants of the reason for Relay For Life. |
Other info.
There is a list of tips on fundraising that I can give all of you to help. We have until May. $100 each should be a breeze.
The luminaries are a seperate fundraising event and do not contribute to the total funds raised by the team. The Luminaries are $10 each and are to honor those that are fighting, have survived or have fallen to cancer. I know I will be buying some. This is a major part of the relay and will be very touching. It's very hard not to feel touched by the emotion in the air. The track is lined with bags containing candles. All the candles are lit and the lights are shut off so that the entire track is illuminated by only the candles. You put the name of a person you want to honor on the form for the luminary and you can look around the track to find yours.
We should probably hook up a few times before the event to discuss how the fundraising is going and maybe give each other ideas on what fundraising techniques have worked.
Well at this point, I must ask who is still willing to do this with me. I really hope that everyone is willing to do this. It is for a great cause and I look at it this way. My father died of cancer. What if the funds I raise are what is needed to find the cure? Then I know I won't be dying of cancer too.
Cancer is a part of most of our lives. Most of us can find a friend or family member that has or had Cancer in one of its forms. For me, I was touched by Cancer twice so far and I'm only 27. My father was killed by it when I was 2. I didn't even know him, but from what my family tells me about him, I wish I did. But that doesn't help me any. My girlfriend beat it. And I want it to be possible for others to beat it too. So that no one has to ever go through what I did.
If you want to help me with this, post and let me know. I will contact you by PM with other information.
If you need some more information now, check out the Relay For Life website. |

OK, so I am getting the feeling like some people are hesitant because of the fundraising aspect of this event. :Oo: Not to worry, I promise. When we have a meeting, you will hear about the many ways you can fundraise. It really isn't THAT big of a commitment either, especially considering we have several months to plan. (I organized this last year in three weeks with a team of eleven year olds and everyone raised the $100! And they are all back for more! I have a team of twelve year olds this year and the team has grown in size.) And you don't have to take the whole weekend off. It starts at 7pm on Friday and ends at 10am on Saturday. True, if you are up all night you may not be the most enjoyable person to be around for the rest of the day on Saturday...but hey...Caffeine is one of the wonderful wonders of this world! And they provide everyone with lots of coffee throughout the night! Many people nap throughout the night anyway.
Please post and let us know you are interested. The event itself is SO much fun and it is for a wonderful cause...plus you will feel sooo good inside after the event. : |

OK BOY!!!!! BREATHE :p
To tell you the truth, I was hoping to put this off until I got to Atlanta in two weeks but the boy has no patience. Is there a deadline that needs to be met before March 1st?
I hope there is going to be an Atlanta team guys. My friend did one of these up here in DC and often speaks of it with fond memories! |

Yup, it is time to get go'n. We have three people (Shino, Skibirdi, Saleb Duvat) on the team, we need seven more. You DON'T have to be on PO to be on the PO team, although it would be nice. So anyone who has a significant other, sibling, friend, whatever that is interested... |

So, what with all the silence on this one... do we have a PO team for the event? I'm at Tech, have to leave town for the summer that weekend (lease is up), but if we've got a team I might be able to work something out to stick around.
Any more folks in? From my count Shino, Skibirdi, Saleb Duvat, Sluggergirl, Nor am I... two more? |
