Because I didn't want to thread-jack Shurikane's Computer School Snippets thread, but because I had to get some of this off my chest to y'all.

I taught at Georgia Medical Institute, a "post-secondary" school where people could train to be pretty much anything in a medical office except a nurse or doctor (no degrees from our school, just certs). My classes were populated with anywhere from 10-25 students on average, and I had to teach them how to use a computer. Nothing as complex as what Shurikane's having to help teach those Idiot(esse)s - just how to operate Office products, how to type, and a couple classes on a practice management system. Now, here's where things get interesting. These students were going to be either Medical Insurance Biller/Coders ("MIBC"s) or Medical/Dental Administrative Assistants ("MDAA"s), and below are some actual quotes.

  • "They told me I wasn't going to have to learn much about a computer 'cuz I'm afraid of the things." (From an MDAA student, holding the MIBC program outline, which still clearly states that she will be gaining an extensive knowledge of computers).
  • "Mr. [Kugyou]...I..not sure how to explain, but...English I do not speak too well. You can [checks Russian-English dictionary]...go more slowly?" (From an MDAA student who also simply could not understand why she needed to learn any medical terminology, and the whole class was three days behind already because of her)
  • (Repeated quote)"Mr. [Kugyou]! My modem won't turn on!" (Multiple students, after going through the "parts of a computer" section of my class", still referred to the main box as the "modem")

Then again, this is the school that lost its accreditation and then doubled its advertising - I have just about literally seen a GMI ad on every public TV. Dentist, check. Kaufmann Tire, check. Italian Oven, check. Why can I not escape these horrible people?

To continue on the theme, I also have some choice cuts from my last job, working as a tech support rep for multi-national law firms.

  • "Do you want me to turn on the computer or the modem?" (Translated: Do you want me to turn on the monitor or the computer?)
  • "My BlackBerry says 'FATAL ERROR PRESS ENTER TO RESET'. What should I do?"
  • Technology Practice Group Lead: Outlook won't let me add any more e-mail to my Personal Folders. It says it's full.

Me: Ooch, not much we can do about that except make a new set of Personal Folders to house the rest of your e-mail. There's a maximum size for these files, and it's set by Microsoft and can't be chang -

Him: Look, I don't want excuses, just get IT to increase the limit on this thing, because I'm not making another (expletive) file!
  • "How many times do I have to tell you I cannot type in lowercase on my computer?" (After remoting in to this Equity Partner's computer, I find that his fonts are all set to Small Caps)

*grumbles* So, anybody need an out-of-work tech guru/rusty Java programmer?

(From an MDAA student who also simply could not understand why she needed to learn any medical terminology, and the whole class was three days behind already because of her)

Yeah. That one also complained that we didn't have textbooks in Russian, and essentially claimed the whole while that we were discriminating against her because she wasn't from the U.S....no, we're telling you you are not going to make it in the medical front-office field because you do not speak passable English without a dictionary! Not to thread-jack my own rant, but...

Why is it that a U.S. citizen wanting to live or work in most any other country can be required / incentivized to learn the language - for example, the last time I tried to emigrate to Canada, I noticed that speaking fluent French carries about as much weight as having a Master's degree - but if the U.S. were to even think of instituting a requirement that you be able to speak English, we would be chastised by the global community (note: Georgia took some serious flak when it instituted English as its "official language" some years back)?

Terminology is always a fun thing to work around. We'll all be like this when we're older and trying to figure out our kids and grandkids' newfangled devices, I'm sure. For now, though, it's more a matter of... does anyone actually read the freaking manual anymore?
