May 3, 2006 - In a major surprise that will please many fans, Lucasfilm
has announced that the original, unaltered theatrical versions of theStar Wars Trilogy will be released on DVD this September. For many years now George Lucas had said he would not release the original cuts of the film, but things have clearly changed, with the press release crediting overwhelming fan demand as the reason.
The new box set of the trilogy will contain both the original cut and the 2004 digitally remastered version of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The set will be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. |

Actually you'll technically have it three times since the new set will pretty much have had the versions you own right now too :3 |

Yeah it's time to "regift" my current set.
Or maybe sell it to one of the used DVD stores.

See I KNEW Lucas was gonna pull some BS when they didn't include the original unaltered versions. There's such a HUGE market for them it's not really Brilliant marketing but it's a predictable LucasArts double dip. I'm glad I held out in the hopes for the unaltered versions to be released eventually (and I knew they would, they HAD to be). And I know that they had to have been planning this maneuver since the original DVD release. |

Why get these when you can get the REAL Star Wars?
I always had a suspicion he'd release the old Star Wars...My problem is, will he release the old Star Wars With or Without the white boxes of doom?! (Watch the old cuts when things move in space.) |

Interesting. At first glance, I thought that they were releasing these as a boxed set, but if you read the actual article, they say that they will be individial and "attractively" priced...whatever that means.
Fortunately, like Ultra, I held out on buying the original triliogy on DVD, but not because I was expecting another version eventually. I just figured that at some point, they were going to release a large boxed set with all 6 films. But according to this new info, I think I may just buy them all individually in order to take advantage of (clearly) superior releases come September.
The only problem I have is that I currently own 2 versions of the original trilogy on VHS. One from the 20th Anniversary release in 1997, and one from when they were digitally mastered and released again in theaters. Oh well...I'd much rather have the DVDs...and who knows...maybe VHS tapes will become collector's items one day... |
