Ha yes indeed it has made it's lure on me. At the same time I have sworn allegience to the Mantis clan. The proverbial underdog of the clans, there's just something about them that inspires a sense of purpose to me. Oh it might also have to do with the PIRATES and SEA SERPENTS. I've already begun my twisted research into deck types. |

Actually, from what I've read, I think the Mantis clan is one of the strongest clans in the game, and I think because of the sea serpents. Terin? Any comments on Mantis? |

I'm not going to say much until Terin teaches me the game.
However, I know I can't get into another game as much as I am into Magic right now. That doesn't mean I can't get into L5R though.
Hecatomb is easy... I can get boxes super cheap and the game is dead. After I get the cards, I don't have to get anymore.
L5R looks far from dead and Lotus boxes are going in the area of $80.
So what I'm thinking, is maybe if I like the game, I'll grab one of their premade theme decks and see how that goes for a while. After that, we'll see. |

Well that seems to be the buzz about it despite how many people complain that Mantis gets the short end of many sticks. Though all it takes is a little ingenuity and any clan can be kickass. The big flaw among mantis is that their different personalities have trouble finding synergy with each other. Apparently it's tough to make a deck with Pirates/orochi and naval and have them actually work together well. So you either go one way or the other which can be very harmful to some prospective deck ideas. |

I will attest to the fact that it is never easy to get into other games once you have delved so deeply into one. I've been playing Magic since 7th grade, and in that period of time I have tried to play MANY other games, such as the original Star Wars CCG, Jyhad (now Vampire), Doomtown, Pokemon, Babylon 5, Mage Knight, Warmachine, L5R, and Hecatomb, and haven't really stuck with any of them. Part of the reason it's tough is that you have to start spending MORE money to play other games, and the other reason is that it just gets hectic to keep up with so many games.
Regardless, I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I noticed that the beauty of L5R (particularly if you're just playing it for fun) is the clan system. It's much easier to swallow the whole thing if you only have one or two groups to keep track of. Plus, if you have a few people playing, you can just swap stuff. For example, I'm playing Unicorn or Dragon and Tobs is playing Phoenix or Ratling, so anything Phoenix/Ratling stuff that I get I give to him and vice versa.

That sounds very similar to green in Magic, to tell you the truth. People complain constantly that green always gets shafted, and often times it's the most powerful color in a given environment. |

Not this player brother. I'm a huge fan! I have a mono spirit/arcane deck that is pretty freakin scary! |

Well yeah a lot of the complaints are a bit premature, as there were some Mantis victories in the Kotei season, I think three which meant some mantis cards got to find enlightenment.
Story and Game wise the focus will be at the world tourney in Brussels. Odds are the clan that wins is gonna get something big, as the life of the emperor is at stake. It actually sounds cool as the scene of the story is going to be played out with each round. Eventually the best of each clan will enter the cavern in the shadowlands and decide if they want great treasure or to totally screw over another clan.
Oh yeah, there is gonna be a lot of backstabbing in this game hehe. too bad we shant be able to see it. |

10 bonus points to Girkon for doing his homework!!
Shino, one of the cool things about L5R (with me being HERE now) is that I have a TON of cards to choose from. Once I teach you guys to play, you can just pick a clan and concept and I'll build you a deck to your liking. Then you can borrow/buy (cheaper than 80$$ I swear to you) and tweak it. I'll have no problem trading back uncommons/commons, and as long as you buy a few boosters here and there (primarily from the newer expansions) for the most part I'll have no problem trading rares that you need. I want to start a community of L5R players here, and I'm willing to take a metaphorical kick in the nuts (cardwise) to get it jump-started. Girkon, if you want an Orochi deck, I'll build you one. Then you can try it out, see how you like it, and decide from there whether or not you'd prefer a pirate theme. No one's asking you guys to dump a ton of money into this, I pretty much already have FOR us. I just wanna run tournaments, get promos, and get you guys started. My main thing is also wanting to get a group together to go to a Kotei next year (regional championships) as I've only been to one, but it was TONS of fun! Also, as you can tell by Girkon's post, once you delve into the stories, you just want to learn more. Get started at http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page just pick a clan and find out their history. That should be enough to clue you in on their playstyle, plus it's all canon.
Anyway, I'm tired of selling this thing. How's Monday for teaching it to you guys?
