I just saw an ad for the above product, hyperscan gamer. apparently, the system works with trading cards combined with a video game system which scans the cards for the battles. i haven't done a ton of research yet, but it seems that the main questions with the product are the cost (since data saving playing cards, a system, and the game disc for each tcg would probably be expensive) and attractiveness of product. they have x-men right now, but will need a mix of more popular names and more consistent names to keep a product like this above the surface. |

Looks interesting but it's really just an evolution of The Barcode Battler that came out about 20 years ago. Still, I'll be interested in seeing what properties they license. X-Men is so overdone for me. |

Heck, I'd buy one if it was JUST the bag of chips.
Shammy loves him some chips... |

The Barcode Battler is kinda cool in it's limited way. It has no graphics to speak of but the underlying program is still so far ahead of what game makers are doing (scan in barcode info (ie. set of numbers) and translate that into usable data) that it's scary. The only game even close to this is the Monster Rancher series (in their own limited way) altho I do recall some company saying they were going to use it as a way to create decals/stats/tracks in some racing game like a a million years ago.
Why no one really blew out the possibilities to this is incomprehensible to me.
And yes, mine still works. There was a rumor that back when it came out a certain soup label in Japan vreated an uberpowerful character and kids were ripping off the barcode all over the city. LOL
I found that Cap'n Crunch had a really good barcode here.
There's another (failed) product called Skannerz that tried it. It's a handheld game system. I have the Yu Yu Hakusho version. You may be able to still find it in Family Dollar. |
