Book seven is due to arrive this summer, during the times the class is held.
Oxxy-- your advice is completely useless to me. You obviously haven't read all of what I wrote. Thank you for the spam.
Shuri-- Actually, the only other class that's going to be half as interesting and fun is going to be the Mythology class I'm taking next semester. At my school, the only lit classes they like to teach are American Lit, and I have literally no interest in them.
Besides, it's not just a Harry Potter class. I have a chance to get published, and I'd like to take it. Whether he follow through with it or not, the work that went into it will look good on my portfolio in the end-- not because it's Harry Potter, but because it's going to be a -lot- of writing. And writing towards a specific cause. |

6 classes are still a lot...my hours were weird...the classes I had to take ranged from 2-5 hours.
Just be clear on what you are going to have to do for this and exactly what kind of credit you're going to get for all your hard work. Like I said, it is highly doubtful that your name will go on the front cover. You need to check this before you can really say you've been published. By technicality, its your professor who is published, unless he credits you as a co-author, you will likely just be acknowledged in the book for your help.
And to take it a bit further, you need to make sure your name is somewhere in that book before you can use your excerpts from it for your portfolio or else you can be called on it for fraud. Better yet, I'd ask the professor to write you a letter of commendation acknowledging your contribution to the book which would act as solid proof and also look nice for your portfolio.
On a lighter note, taking Mythology should help you with the book research. I would hang onto that course material to use as a resource. History Channel actually ran a Harry Potter speial last night where they traced the origins of the Sorceror's Stone back (it was actually refered to as the Philosopher's Stone)...and they completely went into the Alchemy side of it all, which is funny if you follow Full Metal Alchemist. Listening to it all actually makes more sense and adds a little bit of validity to the anime... |

*nods* I thought it was brilliant timing with the mythology thing, myself.
Now, he didn't say I'd be on the front cover. We are all supposed to have our name in the credits, however. It'll probably be somewhere at the back of the book, or in an Acknowledgements section or something to that effect. The details aren't clear, and I'm sort of hoping for some sort of paperwork on the first day of class that we sign saying it's okay to use our material in his book and that he will credit us. The letter of commendation would be good too, so long as I get credit for my work.
Otherwise, I may drop the class.
And yes, six classes is a big number. I'd rather not, and I think that's a nice chunk of the reason I want to participate in this, as well as the possibility of at least getting my name in the book somewhere, getting my work in a published book, etc. ...and having a -ton- of fun. He's got a lot of stuff in the works-- we're going to be Sorted and given different groups to work in (Aurors, Animagi, House Ghosts, Dumbledore's Army, etc) and we'll have a version of Quidditch, as well as House Points system and he's trying to arrange for us to be able to visit London at the end of the summer for a week. |

That does sound like fun...we watch HP last night And I LOVED Greek Mythology!
Going to London would be incredible...but expensive.
I'd at least go for that letter...it will at least act as proof you did something towards a book.
What school/major are you in?---I'm jealous. Even the classses I liked never did anything like this. |

I'm at North Georgia College and State University. It's a pretty schway school, overall. We technically have the best English department in the state, as well...though it's rumoured that's just because of one particular teacher (sadly, not this guy, though he's actually one of the favourites even among non-English majors) I'm an English Major with a Concentration on Publication and Writing. Or Writing and Publication. I can't remember the order of it.
Yeah, I think that'll do it, as far as the letter 'n stuff. I still think there will have to be some sort of paperwork we have to sign for this to be okay. College or no, you usually have to sign something to be an extra in a movie, so why wouldn't you have to in order to let your work be published? And that should go a long way towards proving that it is my work. |

As I was told when applying to a very prestigious college in North Texas my senior year...
"Don't go to school, take all your money and go to Europe."
And I've never been happier....
But seriously, do what you enjoy, there is plenty of time to be a slave monkey to the all mighty dollar. If you wanna take this class...take the class. If ya wanna get out early and start slaving away, slave away. Me personally, now that I work how I do, and have a wife...take all the time you can to enjoy, before obligation eats it all. |

Graillic does make a good point...once life hits...you lose a lot of your chance to take advantage of the fun stuff.
So by the time all the classes are over you'll be like me...and English grad with some extra fluff to your title.
Mine was: BS in Technical and Professional Communications Technology with broad spectrum concentration in Engineering.
Translation: I have an English degree and know how to make an engineer sound as smart on paper as he does in his field. |
