Personally I don't mind whether it's subtitled or dubbed, I can watch it either way. Shandriz has a good point though that sometimes you spend too much time reading the subtitles and not enough appreciating the movie, It's not a big deal in some movies but in others I can't count the times where I went "damn what did I miss".
As far as Apocalypto I'm not very interested. I dunno, I'm sure it'll be fine but It's just not my piece of pie. I'll probably catch it on DVD sometime. |

years of playing RPGs and watching Subbed anime have given me a fine tuned speed subtitle reading skill. So I usually dont miss much watching foreign films.
Unless its one of those foreing films where the girls walk around topless alot. Then the story isn't important. |

Will probably wait to see this until I am with my Mezo-American Archaeology colleagues, so they can check for accuracy on the film.
...Yes, I am a nerd, but if you're going to set a movie in widely studied archaic culture, you better be prepared for fact checking. |

Not EVERYTHING has to be historically accurate, even things set in "widely studied archaic cultures". Braveheart wasn't exactly historically accurate, and yet it was an amazing movie. Geez...give credit where credit is due. Everyone's so critical nowadays, and doesn't appreciate movies that are just done well. |

a few interesting articles Ive found in regards to opinions/accuracy/etc:
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/newsletter/mu-html/la-wk-movies7dec07,0,6122831.story
Quote: |
The creative team behind Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" did a lot of research on the once-magnificent Maya civilization of Mexico that, during a 1,000-year period, created huge cities, magnificent pyramids and a culturally and scientifically advanced society.
But when it came time to re-create that universe, which disappeared 500 years ago, they allowed their imaginations to build upon historical fact.
"There are no photographs of history," said production designer Tom Sanders, who previously worked with Gibson on "Braveheart" and "Maverick." "It gives you a lot of creative license. We wanted to set up the Mayan world, but we were not trying to do a documentary. Visually, we wanted to go for what would have the most impact. Just as on 'Braveheart,' you are treading the line of history and cinematography. Our job is to do a beautiful movie."
Sanders said the creative team attempted to get as close to historical fact as possible before giving the designs their own spin.
"We had an archeologist, Dr. Richard Hansen, onboard," said Sanders. "It was really fun to say, 'Is there any proof they didn't do this?' When he said, 'There is no proof they didn't do that,' that gives you some license to play."

Quote: | Some Mayas are excited at the prospect of the first feature film made in their native tongue, Yucatec Maya. But others among the 800,000 surviving Mayans are worried that Gibson's hyper-violent, apocalyptic film could be just the latest misreading of their culture by outsiders.
"There has been a lot of concern among Mayan groups from Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, because we don't know what his treatment or take on this is going to be," said Amadeo Cool May of the Indian defense group "Mayaon," or "We are Maya."
"This could be an attempt to merchandize or sell the image of a culture, or its people, that often differs from what that people needs, or wants," Cool May said.
Gibson employed Mayas, most of whom live on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, in the filming of the movie, and says he wants to make the Mayan language "cool" again, and encourage young people "to speak it with pride."
The film has been screened for some U.S. Indians, who praised the use of Indian actors. The Mayas haven't seen it yet, but like Indians north of the border, they have seen others co-opt their culture, as in high-class Caribbean resorts like the Maya Coast and the Maya Riviera.
"Apocalypto" also portrays Mayan civilization at a low moment, just before the Spaniards arrived, when declining, quarreling Mayan groups were focused more on war and human sacrifice than on the calendars and writing system of the civilization's bloody but brilliant classical period.
Outsiders' views of the Maya have long been subject to changing intellectual fashions. Until the 1950s, academics often depicted the ancient Mayas as an idyllic, peaceful culture devoted to astronomy and mathematics. Evidence has since emerged that, even at their height, the Mayas fought bloody and sometimes apocalyptic wars among themselves, lending somewhat more credence to Gibson's approach.
Warrior-kings and priests directed periodic wars among the ancient Maya aimed at capturing slaves or prisoners for labor or human sacrifice. Entire cities were destroyed by the wars, and whole forests cut down to build the temples.
The latest trendy theory is a largely Internet-based rumor that the Mayan long-count calendar predicts a global calamity on Dec. 22, 2012. Some have woven that together with prophecies from the Bible.
Mauricio Amuy, a non-Maya actor who participated in the filming of Apocalypto, says the production staff discussed the theory on the set.
"We know the Bible talks about prophecies, and that the Mayas spoke of a change of energy on Dec. 22, 2012, and it (the movie) is somewhat focused on that," Amuy said. "People should perhaps take that theory and reflect, and not do these things that are destroying humanity."
While they resisted the Spanish conquest longer than most Indians -- the Mayas' last rebellion, the War of the Castes, lasted until 1901 -- many were virtually enslaved until the early 1900s on plantations growing sisal, used for rope-making, or in the jungle, tapping gum trees. Discrimination and poverty are probably their greatest enemies today.

there's more out there of course...
And definitely remember, this movie is not for those with weak stomachs. Lots of blood and gore, still beating hearts, sacrifices, swinging of babies, etc... |

Hmmmm....Hansen's credentials check out, PHD from UCLA, but I am always hesitant when I see "There is no proof that they didn't do X".
We'll have to see how it turns out. Like I said, I'll reserve my judgement till I am with the more informed of my compatriots. |

I want to see this badly, but unfortunately, I dont live near any movie nerds, and I hate going to movies alone. So, I'll just wait till its on Xbox Live and rent it in HD.
If you guys like stuff like this you should definately check out the Trilogy of books by Gary Jennings called "Aztec" "Aztec Autumn" and "Aztec Blood" excellent excellent books, and Jennings is an astounding author who really dives into his subject matter before writing. I cant recall the name of it right now, but he wrote a book about Gypsies and actually lived with a Gypsy Circus community for a year beforehand. He does great Historical Fiction, you should also all check out a book of his called "The Journeyer" it's about Marco Polo and is a very excellent read, long, all of his books are of the 1/2 pound paperback variety, but they are excellent, he is a master wordsmith in my opinion, the likes of King, Rice, Koontz, and (early) Sheldon. Viva La Reading!!!!!!! |
