So wait... Tivo like features? Does that mean I can use my ps3 as an HD-Tivo of sorts?

So now I can get a Blu-ray player, HD-Tivo and a Game System in one for $600.

If they do implement Tivo-like features and the recordings are in HD... considering the HD-Tivo is $800, I'm freakin sold. Guess we'll have to wait until summer and see.

Phil Harrison Hints at PS3 Firmware Features
Look for XMB multi-tasking, access to your PS3's content via Internet.

Next March has been hinted as the release date for the first substantial firmware upgrade on PlayStation 3, which Sony President of Worldwide Studios Phil Harrison apparently confirmed to those who attended a meet-and-greet with the man coordinated by Sony-funded blog ThreeSpeech.

According to the attendee, XMB multi-tasking (to what extent, however, is unknown -- can we browse the Internet while downloading a demo?), new XMB display options (a fix for the scaling issues?), new animations for audio playback, new photo album options, PlayStation Store auto-resume and a PSP Remote Access option to access PS3 content via any Internet connection are all on the table.

Sony also plans to incorporate Tivo-like features into the machine sometime in the late summer/early fall of next year.

There were also hints about the impending European launch, which may occur on March 3rd, 2007, if the attendee interpreted Harrison's suggestions correctly. Additionally, gamers shouldn't expect to see many (if any) 20GB models available overseas, a decision we'd speculate is due to the desire to take advantage of a slow production line by maximizing profits.

European gamers worried their PlayStation Network IDs have already been taken by the rest of the world can also rest easy in knowing Sony will start allowing users to register their names in the next few weeks.

What? There's a game system in there too?

Shino, "Tivo-like features" does not mean Tivo or else they would have said Tivo.

And you know, for all the things the PS3 does (and it does do a lot) there's one thing it (Sony) hasn't done yet...produced a top quality exclusive game.

For all of it's multi-media functions, it's name is still PLAYstation and playing games has become a secondary function.

Seriously...have you heard of "Resistance Fall of Man"?

Because from what I can tell it's an awesome ass game that got some pretty damn good reviews.

Not to mention the Impending one two punch of God of War 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4.

1. Assassin's Creed is gonna kill everything.
2. TiVo like functions is stated most likely because TiVo is a trademarked item and can not be reproduced without licensing from TiVo.
3. If firmware updates are going to be this expansive, Sony is not gonna pull any punches. I keep telling everyone I meet, PS3 is not a Gaming System, it is the first true Entertainment System. It is meant to be the central hub to all media in your home. Sony is gonna try to pull that off. Will casual gamers fall for it, maybe, maybe not. I do know that Fight Night Round 3 on PS3 hasn't been out long...but it makes me pee myself it's so gorgeous.

Of course I can't afford one...or the HD TV to go with it...or the 5.1 Surround sound I would want...or the $80 gaming chair I would have to complement the system with...or the myriad of other things I would need to make the set up worth while. If ya got the money, go for it. It will probably be the single greatest gaming experiance you can have by yourself legally in the US.

Unless you import Hentai from Korea...

I have tried a bit of the game. It is a great launch title, but to me, for the few moments I spent with the game were not as memorable as the same amount time spent on Gears or Zelda. Plus all the other "good games" for the PS3 are already available on the 360...not to mention they look and play better on the 360 as well. With the exception of Resistance, their exclusive titles are an embarassment. Sony needs to step up to the plate to try to get more titles exclusive to them. They lost Splinter Cell completely and might have had a chance for Bioshock. And more and more PS3 announced games just head to the 360 (it seemed to have just started with Assassin's Creed).

On the subject at hand, TiVo like features are cool...but I already have a DVR...so it is unnecessary for me at this point.

Yeah but look at the 360..When it launched it had crap too.

It took until the folowing X-mas season to get anything as good as Gears.

I'm just gonna say this one time. There is not a single game that will look better on 360 than the $600 PS3 on a flat panel HD television. That was Sony's killer for XBOX, not to ever be out-pixeled again. Thus the HD technology. No one will ever convince me otherwise. Play better? Hmmmm.... that may be a good point or not. To me, even the small XBOX controller is bulky and the controls always felt ackward. PS3 controller is just a new PS2 controller, and I love that controller.

The games have been in developement fo the same amount of time. Now unless the Cell is that more difficult to program for, that is not the best sign for them. Don't get me wrong, I know it will do well, but to be honest, I don't think Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy are going to be enough to keep them in the top spot.

Actually, they did some side by side comparisons to the PS3 and 360 on Gamespot. There were a couple things that were more noticible (such as logos and textures) that looked better on the 360. And some 360 games had a better framerate. Just going by reports of what I read in reviews and some articles.

Granted they were only in 720p, but 1080p isn't fully supported for some of the games (on both sides).

EDIT: I am not saying 360 is the all around better system. But I am say that I feel that a PS3 is almost a money waster for those that already invested in a 360 at this point unless Sony can pull out the better software.

But that's my point. The idea from Sony was to use the 1080i to be the best looking games and content. GT on 1080i is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in a game, hands down. And I have read some of these articles that state the XBOX is still superior to the PS3 in hardware, and by the looks of it they could be right. But again I believe the Sony will change the way we view gaming. Just as we saw the birth of next gen graphics from FFVII to the games we now see on PS2 such as NFSC, there will undoubtedly be a change in the way games are programmed for the PS3. I stand firmly that by the time the dust clears, Sony will be more than satisfied by it sales and outputs, I will one further and say that the XBOX 360 will fall as the leading content provider as the Wii gains strength and will most likely become the household console of choice. High end tech freaks will go with the PS3 for beautiful gaming, and XBOX will keep a niche market of hackers and modders that will find themselves out of $300 because Microsoft will brick them with update patches and software. Bottom line, I see Wii in first, sony in a distant 2nd, and XBOX falling behind in a distand 3rd, just as God intended. Microsoft makes Software, no hardware. Sony makes hardware, and buys all needed software from other companies. Give it six months or one price drop from Sony, and it will all be over.

But then again, Nintendo is going to be king again soon...so who really gives a Wii-mote.

Well if you're going to count graphics as the ultimate judgement of a game then maybe Sony will be king but to me, the graphics compliment the game, not the other way around. Also, like you stated, if I have to spend $1200+ to enjoy the game then it's ridiculous. That's like saying anything less than a Lamboughini is a waste because it doesn't go as fast. The value of any item is it's use weighed against it's cost. The PS3 RIGHT NOW is not worth the money by any equation that's been presented to me. There is not one Blu-ray version of a movie out now that is worth the price of owning a Blu-ray player. There is not one game that I have seen on the PS3 that is so much better in gameplay than everything else that is out (including PS2 and Gamecube games) that is worth the price. I'm not saying that the games don't look good but that's a given. I think Motorstorm (if that's the name) looked awesome but I played it and it's simply still like any other driving game.

I do believe Sony will sell alot of systems in the long run but that doesn't mean anything today. Considering I own less than 4 shooters not named Quake, Gears and Resistance mean less than zip to me. I've seen Fight Night on the 360 and that looked awesome. I then saw Fight Night on the PS2 and it looked simply good. I'm sure Fight Night on the PS3 ON A $1000 TV looks super awesome but at the end of the night it's still a boxing game that I have no intention of playing. Value? Zero.

Also, GT HD has been cancelled so all of that hype and those wonderful screenshots were nothing more than a tech demo. Whatever incarnation of GT that comes out will be the same game we've been playing (or not playing since the last GT I owned was GT2 for the PS) for years...but it'll look really good. I even use the GT screenshot in my screensaver so I admit it looks good but the game sucks for anyone that is not a gearhead. I know over 10 people personally that have the game and have never reached beyong 80% complete on any PS2 version and don't even play it anymore. Seriously, who actually plays GT3 or GT4 anymore? Seriously. When was the last time anyone reading this actually put in the game and played it for more than 1 hour? I own Burnout Takedown, Burnout Revenge, and Midnight Club DUB remix (got rid of the regular version when I got Remix), as well as 3-4 other driving games and GT, even at a Greatest Hits price, has never been a consideration.

Sorry for the essay but I'm trying to support my comments. "Fun" is more important than any other aspect and fun has never been satisfied for me by looks. It's just me, I guess.
