Umm, what is it with ppl and brand loyalty? I just dont get it. Besides entertainment (which isn't a necessity in life) how do these Super Companies benefit your life? lol I dont think they'd feel sorry for you if you lost your job. Maybe sorry for their bottom line, but not about you. |

This is the "castle" of PS3's that we can't seem to get rid of at my Best Buy. We opened at 10 with that amount, and I took that picture at 4:15 as I was finally heading out the door. |

I knew this was going to happen too.
There is only one thing that this can cause.
PRICEDROP!
Sony will finally realize that they can't just charge whatever the F they want for a game system and they will have to drop the price.
Granted... in essence, the 360 is more expensive, but the fact that people have the OPTION to get the additional features is why it sells so much better. |

So here's the rub: I figure that Sony's losing about $200 per machine (just a guess). They'd have to drop it $100 at least to amke a difference in consumer's minds (since we're conditioned to think in tens and then hundreds) so that would mean losing $300 per system. I seriously can't see them doing that without a complete redesign. I've read that they actually lose less, percentage-wise, on the higher end model (which is why they moved less of the cheaper model to retail stores) but still how much can they afford to lose? This looks like Sony really killed themselves and, unrelatedly, let Nintendo back in the game. No...PUT Nintendo back in the game. The PS3's price poiint is the best advertising for the Wii that Nin could have gotten.
Imagine had they released the PS3 as a DVD machine. They could have hit the same price points as the XB360, maybe boosted it by $50-75 for the heck of it, and slaughtered everyone. Nin would have had to release at the sub-$200 point just to make ends meet (tho it was reported that Nin makes money off the Wii straight out the box meaning it doesn't even cost $250 to manufacture one). M$ would have been dealt the killing blow in Japan and a major hacking in the U.S. (I don't know anything about the Euro market). Sony would have rode the Playstation trademark all the way to another ten year domination.
Instead they try to force "the future" upon us, instilling the "if you don't have all of this (HDTV, etc) then you're a peon" attitude on the entire world. I can see they're desperate for BluRay to take hold but to tie the PS3 in to it so dramtically could be a big mistake. |

See I agree with everything you said in the 2nd paragraph and most of what you said in the 1st.
Yeah... they lose a lot of money. But there are 2 pieces of brand new hardware in there. Cell and Blu-ray.
And how does new tech work. It drops in price VERY quick. So losing $200 in Dec may be losing $180 now. Losing $180 now might be losing < $100 in 6 months.
I can definatly see Sony dropping the price if the sales of the machine don't increase very soon. In like 6-months, they could drop the price $100 and still lose $200.
Look at the 360. Last Nov at launch they were losing well over $100, (like $124 or something) now they said they are making money off the system.
This gives HUGE promise to the posibility of a price drop for the PS3. The 360 only had the processor that was "brand new" tech. The PS3 has the processor AND the Blu-Ray. It will happen within the first year of the life of the system. Especially if sales stay low. |

I have no idea what it is about brand loyalty, but I have it. Mostly its with my video games, like above when I humanize sony by "feeling sorry for them". I know they dont give a flake about me, but in their own way theve directly influenced my life since childhood. Even if they dont know it - they're humanized to me in some way.
