To me it's not brand loyalty. I just look at the history and from that, calculate the likelihood that a company will release something that I will like. If a company goes to sht, then it goes to sht. Kind of sad, but since gaming is constantly evolving, it's not exactly like buying your favorite brand of deoderant.
If the PS3 drops in price, there is a chance they could recover from this. But if they wait too long, it's likely that they will royally screw themselves; nobody wants to make games for a system that doesn't sell, and without exclusives, a system is nothing. |

Yeah... they lose a lot of money. But there are 2 pieces of brand new hardware in there. Cell and Blu-ray.
And how does new tech work. It drops in price VERY quick. So losing $200 in Dec may be losing $180 now. Losing $180 now might be losing < $100 in 6 months.
I can definatly see Sony dropping the price if the sales of the machine don't increase very soon. In like 6-months, they could drop the price $100 and still lose $200.
Look at the 360. Last Nov at launch they were losing well over $100, (like $124 or something) now they said they are making money off the system.
This gives HUGE promise to the posibility of a price drop for the PS3. The 360 only had the processor that was "brand new" tech. The PS3 has the processor AND the Blu-Ray. It will happen within the first year of the life of the system. Especially if sales stay low. | I can see Blu-ray technology possibly dropping in price within the next 6 months with everyone out there that is trying to develop it, but not so much with cell technology. I haven't heard of anything else being developed to use a cell processor, and it would take more than the PS3 using it alone to really see enough development to make it cheaper to manufacture. It just all really goes back to Sony trying to be "too new".
It's going to be interesting to see what all happens this year, though. |

That's why I didn't even touch the Cell processor. To me, the Cell is like Blast Processing and Mode 7. It's just a company's own description of tech. The Cell processor is still a processor and it does nothing that some other processor (or combination thereof) doesn't do. It's like the Razr phone, it's just a phone but it's slim so they get to call it whatever they want because it's theirs. As BluRay penetrates more, the general developement cost will drop. My Q is "will it drop significantly enough to make Sony eat more of a debt than they're already eating?" I do feel a bit for them in that they did try to be "too new" but the way they did it only kinda pushes up resentment from me. The PS3 (to me) is saying "To play the games you love you'll have to discard all of that 'old' tech you have and spend more". The maintenance and support of the PS3 makes it not worth it. Had it supported regular AV cable signal and still produced a high quality picture, tho understandably still not equal to HD, then fine. Make the game standard DVD and allow it to read BluRay, then fine.
Give me the choice of how to live my life. I've spent a long time earning it. |

The Cell is a very sophisticated piece of technology. It's already being built into TVs by Sony from what I understand. And it's just like any other processor in that it will get easier to make and costs will drop on it.
Razer, if BD drops significantly, why would they be losing more. My point is that I'm willing to bet that they will drop the price to the point where they are losing the same amount. If not less.
The cost of the 360's production dropped over $120/unit in about a year. I have no doubt that the PS3's production will drop just as much if not more considering it will be both the cell and the blu ray. And lets not forget the graphics chip. That will drop in cost too.
Hell, Nvidia is already putting out there 8000 series. The RSX is built off the 7000 series. Prices on that are going to drop quick soon.
PS3 will drop at least $100 by year end. That is my prediction. |
