This comes from Nintendo's site so a bit of it may be corporate propaganda but a little applause is appropriate.
" Nintendo Records Best Holiday Selling Season in U.S. Video Game History
Jan 12, 2007
Virtually every new Wii and Nintendo DS system sold out across America
There has never been anything like it. Independent U.S. sales figures released by the NPD Group confirmed a red-hot launch for the new Wii system by Nintendo, and the crowning of the portable Nintendo DS as the best-selling video game device of any type for both the holidays and all of 2006.
Along with stunning success for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and historic sales of accessories, including more than 1.5 million extra controllers for Wii alone, Nintendo recorded the most successful across-the-board holiday performance in U.S. video game history.
Among key results:
* Consumers purchased every Wii console available at retail--more than a million in just the 44 days between U.S. launch and year end.
* With sales of another 1.6 million systems in December alone, Nintendo DS achieved full year sell-through of 5.3 million.
* The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was purchased by an extraordinary 86 percent of Wii buyers, or more than 900,000 games for that system alone. Coupled with the companion version released in December for Nintendo GameCube, the two versions of the newest Zelda title totaled approximately 1.5 million unit sales in less than seven weeks, which would represent one of the five best-selling games for the entire year.
* Wii owners also purchased an average of three additional games from a wide library of choices, in addition to the Wii Sports title packed in with every hardware system.
* Two Nintendo DS titles, New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, also were top-10 sellers for the year.
Throughout the November/December holiday shopping period, Nintendo accounted for more than half of all video game hardware systems sold in America.
Earlier this week, Nintendo increased its projected worldwide financial performance for the year ending on March 31 to be the best in company history.
“Millions of players, both hard-core and brand-new, are already enjoying the unique entertainment provided by Wii, but demand for the system remains incredibly high,” says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “So our work is just beginning. We’re dedicating ourselves to maximizing both manufacturing and distribution full bore throughout 2007, to make sure everyone who wants to experience the future of video gaming can do so just as soon as possible.”
The momentum behind Wii will continue unabated through the early weeks of 2007, with retail debuts of WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Wii Play and Mario Party 8 from Nintendo; a host of third-party releases; and a steady stream of classic games made available via download with the Wii Shop Channel. "
I can vouch for the sold out DS's as I had to hunt for three days until a new shipment came in after XMas (three whole days!). Seriously I was shocked that no stores had DS's in the launch period of the Wii and PS3. I understand some spillover of customers that couldn't get the home consoles but still. In a side note, the two Walmarts near me have had PS3's (3 in one store, 8 in another) sitting for over a week now so maybe "lack of supply" isn't quite the reason for it's slow sales. |

Yeah it's a cycle I think..
Nintendo lead with the NES
Then the SNES... although I think that one was more of a tie most of the way.
Then came the N64. This was the downfall. They thought they were the $hit. Turns out they weren't. Sony wins. Nintendo is humbled.
Then they make things get better with the Cube. Sony still wins, but the Gamecube was a step in the right direction.
Now there is the Wii, and they are back on top... or I think they will be.
Sony is now going through this.
PS1 wins by a landslide
PS2 wins by a landslide
Sony gets overconfident and the PS3 does horribly the first 2 months. I think this is going to be the Generation of Sony's Humbling. Then next generation, they will come back... stronger.
Totally my opinion of course. |

unfortunately the Wii sales are also tainted by the eBay resells. That kind of makes me angry cause to me it feels like the sales are cheapened and you don't get a real sense for how the gaming community received the product. Fortunately I believe the console is selling well to gamers and will continue to do so. Heck, I only got mine last week. But I looked for months. |

I agree. Ebay has been a horrible influence on people looking to make a quick buck and sell a system for double what they paid >.> My manager's husband did this--he bought two Wiis, then turned around and sold them for $500 each on Ebay. Then they decided that they wanted one, but couldn't get their hands on one because it was sold out everywhere. !
I think Nintendo's winning move this gen was to not try to compete with the other systems, and instead to make a system designed to be purchased along with one of the other two systems. So really, the competition here was between Sony and Xbox, and I think we all know who won. >.> And honestly, I had previously sworn off Xbox as the embodiment of all that was evil, but now, admittedly, I want one. The 360 has so many titles available for it now that I have a growing list of games that I want to play. And really, Msoft made a fantastic strategic move of releasing the 360 when they did. Because this xmas season, the 360 was undoubtedly the easiest system to get a hold of, not to mention the title selection was larger for it than any other system because it had already been out for a year.
So all in all, I think we are going to see less competition in the gaming industry, and more of a split in the market--one half to go to Microsoft, the other to Nintendo. |
