Well, today was an important day in the training week. We had a MAJOR test on a bunch of safty stuff we had to know VERBATIM, word for word. It was about two pages of material, but I was pretty confident about it. Some of the other guys in the class I thought would be in trouble though. Well time came for the test and he handed us a blank peice of paper, told us to write the safty points, and ... left.
Seriously, he was gone for like half an hour. I did all my paper with out saying a word while several of the other guys helped each other out and told answers. I started freaking out at first, thinking "omg he going to walk right in here while your quasi cheatinG" but he never did. I actually left the room and stood outside a bit and came back (giving everyone asmall jolt ^^). Anyway, good times. But it wasnt the test I was worried about, it was the road.
Thats right, part two of today's training was getting out there in a relitivly averaged sized P8 or P800 (That is, a package car with 800 cubic feet of space.) It was a 5 speed stick shift and the route took us out county and farm market roads (I know you ciy folk are thinkin 'whats a farm market road?' lol, city folk.) and back into town square and through residential areas.
Two guys went before me, and finally it was my turn. Ive never driven a stick shift vehicle farther than 100' and never out of second. So...this was harrowing. I got in scared and just took to it. Turns out, all that retoric safty crap Id memorized verbatim turned out to be really handy. After a few minutes. I was in 4th gear doing 45 up FM 2207 like I knew what I was doing. Didnt kill it once, drove around for 20+ minutes.
I rock.

Two more days to go and I already got the worst part under controll.

CK - Sure, next day air from Tx to Atlanta would be 55$ for a 1lbs package. Minimum. I weight 193lbs. Its bad math. (actually, we dont ship things over 150lbs, huzzah!)

Double post!
Trainign complete as of last Fri and today is my first official day out on the road. Ill be delivering Anna and Melissa, a couple of small population towns north of Mckinney, which is the northern most suburb of Dallas/Plano.
The nervousness is ridiculously insane. 
Nah, Im a trained professional, yo ^_^ I just hope I get the swing of things pretty fast. Like any job, once you get into a good routine, its all gravy. |

Welp, I gotta say Im pooped. Im working like 8-7 Monday through friday. Its been a big change going straight from being home and with my family and sone everyda to being out on the road, shakin for the bacon. The change was swift, brutal, and unpleasent. The work however isnt all THAT bad. A lot of the older drivers make it sound like it not worth getting paid what we do to deliver all day, but its a fair trade.
While the change in my personal life style has been different, Im pleased that Im finally earning enough to support my family and eventually be able to provide much more for them than I ever have before in my life.
Thanks for keeping tabs on me guys ^_^ Im looking forward to seeing everyone again this year. |
