from IGN.com-

Spectrobes Extras on the Cards
Collectible cards that unlock new content to be packaged with the game.

January 25, 2007 - Disney is hoping to give the Nintendo DS role-playing genre an exciting makeover when it releases Spectrobes in March. Each copy of the game will come with four collectible trading cards, which enable the player to unlock new content including rare minerals and materials needed to create powerful new allies, used to battle the evil Krawl.

Each card, which is translucent and has numbered holes in, fits over the handheld's touchscreen. New content is unlocked by tapping the screen through the holes in the correct order, using the stylus. Cards can be traded with friends to get access to more secret extras, plus additional cards will be sold separately, extending the lasting appeal of the game almost indefinitely. Well, at least until Spectrobes 2 comes out.

Disney has also announced that players can earn the ability to download videos, creatures, custom parts and extra minerals via Wi-Fi, as well as connect to the game's website to share their profiles and game stats with Spectrobers all over the globe. Players can also compete in one-on-one battles over Wi-Fi, or participate in tournaments for up to 16 players.

We'll be giving Spectrobes a thorough going over before its March release.

I've been following this and it does look cool. I thought the trading card idea would be stupid as you can simply look up codes online and have "rare" cards become household items. To have to actually physically possess the card is a nice touch. EBay might love it tho.

And here's a review from IGN. It concerns me that they say battles are unchallenging and the mechanics are repetitive. That's the first two ingredients for a real kids' game. I was kinda hoping it would follow in the Pokemon mold a little more as far as depth.
Pokemon battles aren't the most difficult thing in the world but they are challenging if you resist the temptation to cheat (always using the computer's weakness type against it). Personally, since playing the second one I always use the same type as the Gym when battling for badges. You'll notice how much harder it is if you do that.
