Sony and Immersion finally cleared the air and reached a deal.

Looks like it's possible we may see rumble in the PS3 controller afterall.

Now, if Sony can just shut Phil up. That would help.

Sony and Immersion patch up
Electronics giant settles suit with creator of DualShock controller's rumble feature; both companies now "exploring" putting tech back into PlayStation products.

Two years ago, a judge sided with Immersion Corporation in that company's suit against Sony, ordering the electronics giant to pay $82 million for patent infringement. Immersion claimed the rumble feature in the PlayStation's DualShock controllers was based on its own technology.

Now the two companies have put the patent dispute behind them and have formed a new agreement "to explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation format products." The Immersion announcement does not mention the PlayStation 3 specifically, but the system's Sixaxis controller has been criticized for not having a rumble mechanism, a feature shared by the competing Xbox 360 and Wii, as well as the last generation of gaming consoles.

"Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community," Immersion CEO Victor Viegas said in a statement. "We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."

A Sony representative gave the following comment: "We are very pleased to have reached a cooperative agreement with Immersion regarding the use of its advanced vibration technology (haptics technology). We look forward to working closely with them as we explore new and innovative ways to utilize this technology in PlayStation products."

According to an Associated Press report, Immersion will receive $22.5 million from Sony over three years, while Sony gets the licenses to use some Immersion patents.

I always turn off the rumble feature in games if I can, there are very few examples where I feel it really adds to the experience for me.

Maybe not - but then again, I'm one of those people who thinks that the decision not to do something should be semantically meaningful in that one had the decision to do something in the first place. So now your decision not to use the rumble feature in games is meaningful.

On the downside of this is the fact that, since rumble is not built into the current generation of Sixaxis controllers, anyone who wants to be able to experience rumble in the PS3 will have to buy new controllers. Unless Sony's planning on utilizing rumble via a remake of the Rez "Trance Vibrator" (I kid you not, that was the name on the package)...

From what I'm hearing, several racing games actually already support rumble.

You can feel it with the Steering wheel by Logitech apparently.

So, I think the decision should be made to put it back into the SIXAXIS and include it in games from now on.

Well I'm guessing that once the feature is ready (cost and deals are worked out, etc.) that they'll simply add the new controllers into PS3 boxes. They'll also silently discontinue the old model and replace them with the new models for the first 6-8 months or so (or holiday season, whichever comes first).

As for the actual value of the feature, I think it's simply neccesary. Gaming has reached a point where rumble is a standard feature. We didn't take "Q" out of the alphabet because it relies so heavily on "u", did we? You don't remove features when you advance, you add. Also, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say it should be my choice as to whether or not I want to use something. If one person wants to turn off the rumble while another wants it, then that's how it should be. Unless something interferes, impedes, or otherwise compromises the whole of an item, it shouldn't just be wiped out. Sony knew when they added the feature that it was "stolen", they just didn't want to pay (Immersion did contact all three major companies years ago. Nin and M$ agreed to pony up cash and/or deals).

I do like it in shooters and racing games tho. It doesn't make me all tingly inside but it does add to the overall atmosphere for me

To touch on what has been said. I'm neither here nor there when it comes to rumble. However, I can see how in some games it would be an asset. Removal of a feature is always a bad idea.

Sony: 'We're Open to Changing the Sixaxis'
Rumble announcement imminent.
By Dan Dormer, 03/06/2007
In a new interview with Jack Tretton, GamePro magazine got the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America to open up about the company's stance on the SIXAXIS controller. When GT broached the topic, Tretton had the following to say: "You will see peripherals coming from SCEA that will address the interests of the U.S. consumer. I don't have anything to tell you specifically, but we're open to changing the Sixaxis controller."

A major complaint that's been lodged regarding the controller by countless members of the media and gaming community is the lack of rumble, which the SIXAXIS controller doesn't have. Is the extremely careful phrasing by Tretton his way of hinting that we could be seeing rumble functionality in the near future (after all, Sony and Immersion have kissed and made up)?
