Bolded portion is just a rumor at this point. But it's a good idea. They are kind of taking the Mii from Nintendo and the Achievement points from Microsoft and combining them into one feature.

Sounds cool and I'm glad they are doing it. Miis and Achievement points are great ideas!

Internet Explodes over PlayStation 'Home' Rumor
Sony's Home service uncovered?
By Luke Smith, 03/01/2007
Word on the Internet travels fast. From a entry at Kotaku detailed an alleged Sony PlayStation 3 feature to be announced next week at GDC called home, to a sleuth-y NeoGAF poster named GoFreak (the poster uncovered the recent SCEE patent for Home, see image), and the subsequent firestorm that emerged when Kotaku's original story hit. There's a panel next week at the Game Developer conference called "The Experience is King: Social Gaming for the Next Generation" with Dave Ranyard (Creative Services Manager, SCEE), Mike Haigh (Studio Director, SCE London Studio), which has gotten even more interesting with the patent's emergence from SCEE.

But what is this potential 'Home?' Kotaku's insider said this:

"Basically, you get to make an avatar for your console (like a Mii) and this avatar has a room. As you play games and accomplish certain tasks, you will receive items with which to adorn the room that are specific to the game (achievements). The kicker is that this is going to be a new requirement for every PS3 game..."

Another GAF poster claims:

"I have a friend who I maybe see once or twice a year who is a graphic artist for Sony in London. Last time I met with him which is going back at least a good 9 months if not more, I had a chat with him about what he was working on. He talked about some sort of abstract world that was part interface, part virtual world. He seemed to be suggesting it would be part of the PS3 interface as opposed to a stand alone game, and he seemed genuinely excited about it. Anyhoo, it was over a few beers with a group of people and while he talked about ideas I struggled to visualise what he was actually involved with, apart from it was abstract and sounded strangely like Animal Crossing (but in my head I had a much more neon / cyberpunk image, not sure if that was because of something he mentioned previously). He also used the word 'avatar' a lot."

Kotaku lined up a series of quotes from various Phil Harrison interviews before drawing up an outline of the rumor.

"If you are going to have an avatar which is your representative in a virtual world, it has to stand for more of your personality than some 2-D cartoons. So while I think that millions of people would be happy with cartoony looks, the planet at large probably isn't. And it's an experiment that will be played out very soon, actually." -- Newsweek

"We have something big coming up for the PlayStation Network, but I can't say anything about that yet. It has something to do with the Home Button on the SIXAXIS controller, and with the community." -- Next Generation Gamer

So we move from product based to service based, starting with packaged product augmented by downloadble content. We'll enhance this with social networks, the MySpace experience, this will be a key part of the PlayStation3 going forward. What brings it to life is the voice chat, the text chat, the video, the social features we're building in for the future.

The dots seem to connect and a too-public email exchange between Kotaku and Dave Karraker seems to confirm Home, but officially, Sony denies the rumor, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation." However, with all of the "insider" information and piecing together of leaks, do we really have a clear picture of what a prospective "Home" service would be? We might not know until next week at GDC.

Patrick Klepek contributed to this report.

summary!
http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=7934778&publicUserId=5844217

I have to say... Home looks PRETTY FREAKIN' AMAZING!

Think of a PSU type public area with your own Rooms like PSU... but they are Apartments. And you can furnish them. Achievements in the form of 3D trophies that you can display. Cool stuff!

Check it out..

They also showed off LittleBigPlanet which will be a multiplayer online puzzle game accessable from PSN Home's Central Area.

Also mentioned. Free Billiards and Bowling, and in the future...Pets!

I'm really impressed. It's looking as if I may be getting a PS3 sooner than expected!

Sounds cool, I may finally find myself buying a Sony system... after a price drop and better games come out.

Still not worth the price to me right now, but after a new TV and Surround Sound....maybe.

Kotaku and Sony kissed and made up though.

Whatever you guys think... I'm REALLY impressed by this whole thing.

I watched the entire keynote. It's about 50 minutes long, but it's worth watching. After seeing the keynote... I'm MORE excited about it now than I was yesterday.

Seriously, gamers owe it to themselves to watch it! OK, that was pushing it... but it is REALLY good.

Not enough to get me to buy the system. Maybe if it came with an instant $300 rebate.

Shino, remember how impressed the pair of us were after the E3 2005 keynote? Everything since then regarding PS3 has been an absolute joke, and this is nothing new.

Sure, its a good idea, but whats it bringing to the table? It sounds like its going to be forcing advertising down your neck, something EA got huge critiscm for with putting billboards for their games in Burnout 3. Its effectively the same as Your Room in Phantasy Star Universe.

TBH, I'd rather Sony started showing us some games, rather than stuff like this, after all the PlayStation brand is that of a gaming brand, its not Vaio and its not what they call their top-range of TV's its PLAYStation, i.e. a gaming device, not a multimedia home hub, they tried that with the PSX in Japan, and it sucked.

My Sony card is built up... so I was affectivly get a $600 rebate. Wink

I still say that the price will drop $100 by the end of the year. I already think the system is worth $600 for what it is. HD game system + Wireless connectivity + Blu Ray player. If you want that out of a 360 it'll cost you $700. I had trouble buying it at launch b/c there was nothing for me. I don't need a Blu-ray player right now. There's not really a game that I have to play. But the point is, that this I think this new feature will make me feel better about my purchase when they do put out some games I want and I get one.

True, but what they were showing is already there. Beta starts NEXT MONTH! And yes, it is like your room in PSU. But it's much more. You can play your music that's on your system, invite friends to your room to listen to it, watch videos from your HD/memstick on a TV in your room and your friends can watch that too.

Furnature and other stuff. You can make your room a clan meeting place. Things like that.

Also, the central lobby has a ton of stuff. A Theater, Bowling, Billiards, Arcade stand up machines.

And LittleBitPlanet! Looks incredible. And giving the user the ability to make their own stages... We could make a PO stage and post it on the PSN for everyone to play!

As for Games... remember, this is the Game Developer's Conference... This is about showing off what you have for developers... not what games are coming out. They do have some intersting stuff coming out this year. Heavenly Sword gets me more interested every video I see of it.

Advertisments... honestly, I could care less. As long as they keep PSN free... I'm fine with it. Doesn't bother me one bit.

I agree that we still need to see some games before I dive in. But I think they are making steps in the right direction. Everyone critisized Sony b/c thier online experience wasn't there when the system launched. Now they are doing their best to make up for that fact. And I'm liking what I'm seeing. I think many others might too if they weren't blinded by the price of the machine and still pissed off at Sony about it.

I know its already there, but so what? Why couldnt they of done this sooner, saved themselves so much criticsm and whats with jumping on Kotaku's back about it? Rumours spread all the time, and their reacon more or less shouted from the roof tops "yes whats being said is true.

So I can watch my avatar watchig a movie? woooooooooooooow, catch me while I pass out!!! Seriously, thats just a little bit sad, and dnot getme started on the furniture aspect of it, especially if you have to pay for items to go in your apartment with money you've put onto your network account.

Those things are probaly th only aspect of it that I like, I like the idea of Uno and Poker on XBLive, although those have to be paid for, and I can see the Arcade cabinets being Sony's version of releasing demo's to PS3 owners, something Microsoft aslready do, but not in the graphical fashion that Sony are doing it.

Yeah, LBP does look quite cool, reminds me of a blend of various mapmakers and Vib Ribbon for some reason.

Hanst stopped Nitnendo and Microsoft showing off games, especially as GDC is one of the main focal points now that E3's downsizing.

While the gameplay aspect of PSN will be free, they're going to be making plenty of money from their online stores, as do MS and Nintendo, although the reason PSN is free for gaming is that servers aren't set-up by Sony, as they are on XBox Live by Microsoft.

I can see its potential, I'm not saying its a big pile of shite, but I'm also looking at it from the point of view I see the whole industry nowdays, I look at everything critically, pull apart what material I can get my hands on and see whats what and form my own opinions from there. Its a very interesting system, and it'll be intersting to see what they do with it, but at the moment, I'm going to remain skeptical about it until I've got the cash to invest in a EU PS3 myself.

I'd potentially import one frmo Japan/US if Sony hadn't blocked importation of their hardware from outside of Europe!
