Sonic and the Secret Rings is the one of the worst games Ive played in a long time.
On a whim I decided to buy the new Sonic game for the Wii - I figured it was something that whould be a solid buy as I havnt played any really terrible sonic games and even those I did (sonic heros) were at least playable.
I tried very hard to like this game and frankly the stroy is very attractive. The voice acting is passable, after all its only a Sonic game, and even the leveling system and skill sets are all great implementations to a great genre.
Only...the game isnt great. In fact, this game is aweful. There only one direction, forward. And maybe that wouldnt be so frighteningly bad if Sonic didnt move at half the speed of mud. Yeah, the blue lightning takes off at about Mach Yesterday and about the time you get up to a relitivly amusing amoutn of speed (a few minutes later) you inevitibly hit a wall, enemy, or farknarbn cactus in the middle of the street and have to skid to a complete stop to jump over.
A few small, simple things would have made this game sweet. 3d movement for one, a ground dash, and a manaul targeting system. But no, to attack any enemy in the game, you have to skid to a stop, jump up in the air (a long journey, not because you get phat air - and you dont - but becuase apparently the air in arabian nights is thick and have to be swam through)...anyway you have to jump up in the air, then wait for the targeting rectile to turn red, then do an air dash attack. Your attack options are limited to whatever enemy happens to be closest to you, and you cant cancel or change targets in any way. Thats when you dont barrel past them before you get a chance to stop...jump...get air...target...then attack.
The last two missions I did really nailed the coffin on this one for me.
Dinosaur Jungle
Objective: Collect 99 Coins.
At the start of this mission a trio of triceratops come barrelign at you from behind. The camera shows you this and you take off running, toward the camera, having no farking idea where your going. Not that it matters, because it seemed like about have the time I started the mission, Sonic couldnt move fast enough to escape the dinosaurs before I got to start playing.
Dinosaur Jungle
Objective: Dont Defeat Any Enemies
The objective of this mission is to clear the stage without killing any enemies. Im like ok, so I have to weave inbetween them. No - theres at least two parts were there are enemies in the MIDDLE OF THE ONLY ROUTE (remember, ONE direction in this game, forward). I cant run past them or I take damage (and/or die) and I cant jump over them because by the time I get stopped, jump, and try to air dash the targetting recepticle turns red and I go flying into the enemy, killing it and failing the mission.
I have no idea how to circumvent this.
Oh, and lets not forget the 10 minutesI spent running around in a circle becasue the game cglitched me into an infinate loop in some stage. I killed every enemy, adn tilted the WIimote to and fro. I saw where I was SUPPOSED to go, but the damn game kept auto jumping me to some ledge a hundred feet away. And I coudl choose a direction because the only direction is FREAKIN FORWARD.
....
....
Im going to try EXTREMLY HARD to level up Sonic and see if any of these issues even out at higher levels, but frankly I dont know how to progress in the story any further. |

Once you level up and gain more skills the game becomes 1000x more fun. It's really hard but once you get more used to the controls, learn to brake, backstep, knowing when to jump and not airdash etc. you will be alot better. The skills will help tons to helping you control Sonic. |

INSTAFAIL | How about a Sonic game (Sonic the Hedgehog on 360) where you have to buy things that are required to move on in the game with rings? Not cutesy stuff for your Chao. Not shiny skills that make you godly. REQUIRED ITEMS. All with Tails in tow, jumping every three seconds, even in the cities. Oh, and where the Japanese language track is available, but it requires you to put the entire game, including menu text, into Japanese! Let's not even get into the boss fights where the slightest mistake will kill you outright.
I can't figure out why Sonic Team decided to be all Metroid Syndrome on the latest Sonic games. |

Only because it was you that assured me of this Ultrapup, so I give this game another chance. I was dead set on trading this game in, but if you think I shoudl stick within, then Im gonna give it teh old Miniopian try. |

Apparently you missed the 360/PS3 version. I tried the demo and could already tell the game was going to suck.
And from what I heard, Sonic and the Secret Rings is the best Sonic game so far that has been recently released (even though it is still pretty poor). Makes you wonder why they don't just kill the franchise just yet. |

It's a matter of opinion. All the Sonic Advance games were really good, Sonic Rush was amazing. I would argue -that- was the best Sonic Game recently. I loved the hell out of Sonic Riders, lukewarm on Shadow The Hedgehog, hated Sonic next-gen (the 360/ps3 one) and after much trials have come to enjoy The Secret Rings. I think the Sonic franchise as a whole has suffered greatly but I think Secret Rings is a good step.

Believe me, if you were at our household when I first started playing you would have heard many swear word combinations coming out of my mouth such as "<Naughty Word> It Sonic! You <Naughty Word> <Naughty Word> <Naughty Word> Blue <Naughty Word> Mother <Naughty Word>! Jump on the <Naughty Word> <Naughty Word> Platform, You Stupid <Naughty Word> <Naughty Word>!!"
The game is incredibly hard and frustrating at first, but as you gain more skills that allow you to maneuver, corner, control your speed, and such you will get much better at the game and have much more fun. It just takes a little while. I had the same problem with Sonic Riders at first, the game was pissing me off until I figured out how to master the controls. Improved Braking is a big help.
What I did on the Dinosaur level was air dash to get enough speed to get away from the horn strikes or maybe I weaved back and forth so that I wouldn't get it.
As far as the enemies, I jumped over them but didn't air dash so that I wouldn't homing attack. Believe me some of these missions are frustrating as all hell but it gets easier. I've beaten the game (at the least the story mode) and now if I go back and do those beginning missions it's almost literally a cake walk because I have all these awesome skills at my disposal.
My favorite skill by far is a skill that makes it so that whenever you slide you can't be hurt by whatever you touch. I combine that with a skill that lets me slide longer and faster, whenever I run into any obstacle that pops up at the last second I just slide into and past it, taking no damage. I blaze through some of the levels now with the speed up skills I have. I mean I can blabber on but trust me and just try to do your best until you get better skills. Don't worry about medals or anything until later in the game. |
