I was reading a post by Shino and i had a thought but i decided to move it here rather than be rude and hijack his thread.
I've had this thought that I have been tossing about lately regarding the future of the X-Box console franchise. I'm curious to see how long it will take M$ to bridge the console-computer gap, getting the competition into their territory where they would ideally be able to have the upperhand by default of experience. This possibility has my curiousity absolutely riveted. I mean think of it! The Wii's revolutionary controllers would just be a driver that would enable it to work on the computer systems of the near future with console style gaming experiences. Really, M$ in this platform war (as far as systems, peripherals and software) seems like its using spartan tactics (or Sun Tsu's) by funneling the opposition into a narrow passage and getting them on your turf. Now before anyone formulates their rebuttal please note that I am not extensively knowledgable on computers and some of this insight is limited by that fact but the whole tactic seems like reverse engineering at it's finest. They have the most popular OS in the world for standard-issue computer users, so they would just have to assimilate the ease of control consoles have and then it's basically their ballgame to lose.
What say any of you about this eventuality?

I think they are already trying to combine their userbase. Bring Windows users into the world of the 360.
Now that they have Live for Windows. Which is retarded I think. In order to use voice chat, you have to sign up for the Gold membership. Even though some Developers want to add voice chat to their games, MS is trying to stop them from doing so.
It's horrible, really. |

Some of those Live for Windows games allow you to play with 360 owners of the same title.
I believe the new Team Fortress is one of them.
I also heard something about all te stuff you've accessed on your 360 is accessible through your pc once you become a Live for Windows member, which will be free so long as you already have a 360 gold account. |

Consoles are developed for fairly specialized tasks. If and when the hardware gets good enough that PC-type hardware can run console stuff without bugs, crashes, or significant slowdowns or performance hits, then we'll transition over into that kind of realm. Sony and Microsoft both are starting to bill their works as mostly computers and giving them functions thereof. Even the Wii has a Web browser. I think out console/computer world will be merged, soon, but only when the keyboard/mouse peripherals become a lot more popular and the experience of console computing is identical to computer computing (and television monitors can do computer-like resolutions.) |
