The problem I have with the word 'destroyed' is that it makes them sound more like inanimate objects, as 'destroy' is a word more commonly used to refer to inanimate objects. You destroy buildings, y'know?
My worry with the Pitt bull wasn't necessarily for members of PO, because most of us are intelligent enough not to go "PITT BULLS SHOULD ALL DIE BECAUSE THEY ARE EVIL DOGS!" but, the article -itself- worries me because they mention the dogs as Pitt bulls specifically and anyone could read it and come to the conclusion that all Pitt bulls are evil, given the negative attention the dogs get. |

I guess I understand where you're coming from, but in defense of the article, what else was it supposed to say? All it was doing was stating the facts of what happened. |

Actually, from looking at the article again, the dogs are not to blame from it but the owner that let the dogs just wander freely. If he were to take care fot eh dogs and watch them - raise them properly - then this wouldn't have happened.
at least thats how Im reading this. Maybe I'm wrong. |

It could just say "Dog saves children from dog attack!" instead. The breed of the dog isn't really critical to the story itself. |

I suppose, but it would be doing a disservice to the Jack Russel who sacrificed himself to save the kids, and the story wouldn't have as much merit to it.
If it just said "two dogs" then it could be two chihuahuas for all you know.
I know that's a silly example, but I don't see how it really matters. People have already crafted their opinions towards pit bulls. I don't think that omitting their name would have changed that, and I don't think that the addition of their name will cause any more animosity towards them than they already have. |

To say pit bulls are more agressive than other dogs is BS. All dogs are agressive naturally, pit bulls are just very powerful. So many people cannot controll them.
If a dog is raised correctly they will never be a threat to anyone regardless of breed. When they are abused is when they become unpredictable.
As for the jack russle that lil guy is bad ass. But it's not exactly special because dogs protect their pack. My dog sassy(named by my mother ) is the most timed thing ever. But a german shepered charged us one day when I was walking her and she went ape shit on the dog lol |

Its a very abrupt article which sadly goes with the same theme of "If it bleeds, it leads".
I think the term "Destroyed" may just be the more common term for that particular area...New Zealand.
I could have done without the details on what the Pits did to the little guy, kinda TMI.
Pit Bulls are going to always get a bad rep. I still stick to the idea though that its not the dog, but their owner that mold them into who they are and how they behave. Although I've never really encountered one, I would assume that like any dog, you have to set boundaries and work with them so that they behave in an acceptable manner from day one. If you have a dog with an aggressive nature, fostering it will only make them into the monsters that the media makes them into. Its not their fault if they attack someone, it is their owner for encouraging them to be that way around others.
I just wish there was more owner and adult accountability for pets. The owners need to be accountable for both the behavior and the location of their pets. And, adults should be aware of their own children in the same way. They are always the ones pushing to have that dog put down for attacking their child...but they skirt around the fact that not keeping tabs on their kid is what got them attacked in the first place...in many cases.
Sorry to rant a bit, but I'm an animal lover. I love how Rachael Ray has a Pit Bull...a girl named Isaboo LoL I get a laugh out of how the dog gets to ride in the passenger side of her mom's Mini coop! |
